How do you guys keep your wipers from freezing up? The wipers aren't far enough up the windshield for the defrost to heat them up in the off position so they freeze and then won't wipe anything when turned on. They just leave streaks.

I had the same thing happen to me yesterday. It rained the night before then the temp dropped to below freezing. My wipers were frozen to the windshield. I use a product made by Prestone called DE-ICER. It works great and it does not seem to re-freeze after you apply it.

Hope this helps.

JD,

There's not a lot you can do about the ice that freezes on rubber blade itself, other than the de-icer. If the actual wiper blade itself freezes into the arch shape, of course that makes them usless. But that can be fixed by replacing them with the one with the rubber 'overcoat' that keeps the water out of the hinged areas. You should be able to find them in the auto parts stores. I got mine a COSTCO just the other day. They carry the TRICO brand.

I use Prestone deicer windshield washer fuild in the winter. When I park with a wet windshield in freezeing weather I run the washer right before shuting down,it leaves a coating on the blades and glass that won't freeze, also keeps snow & freezeing rain from sticking. My block heater also will melt the snow off the windshield and hood as long as it doesn't go below 20°.

Sure would be nice if they had a heated pad as the 96+ mommie vans.
If it is a bad problem, I would try those inexpensive furnace vent deflectors. Simply replace the magnetic mount with a bit of double stick tape.

Not an elegant fix, but they are clear and cheap

Just a thought

Hmmm, block htr? As long as I can plug in I gots no problem, have a small heater in the cab turned on low. No like scraping in morn, no like cold shifter, no like phords, no like cold, no like generals (was Navy - like Admirals - even TV kine), no like... .....

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will try the prestone de-icer. I would love to get the Espar but right now the funds just aren't there for it. Besides, that still wouldn't help them from freezing up while driving.

When my truck was new one wiper blade would 'park' about 1" from the bottom of the window and the other would park about 3 to 4" above. The defrost would generally work for the 3" blade and not keep the blade parked at 1" free of ice. I asked a dealer to adjust the wipers to park evenly, at 3", and this helped quite a lot.

Heated wiper blades would be awesome Carl!! As to the snow blades with the rubber covers over them, in my experience they are worse that the regular blades.
