While traveling through Riverton Wyoming a few weeks back (still around freezing or just below at night) I was fueling up at a truck stop around 11:30 pm.

Fuel truck pulls up alog side and gets set up to deliver his load of diesel to the underground reservior.

As I set and watched, the man took about a 2. 5 or 3 gallon jug of Power Service and added it to the underground tank just before he added the fuel.

I'm thinking that he was using #2 fuel and adding the PS to make it a "winter blend" or #1 grade fuel.

I was shocked. I had always thought #1 was blended at the refinery, but apparently not. I can't imagine why else he would have been adding it.

Who knows what other companies/delivery people are adding... I guess they have to add something... ?

It's fairly common to get winter fuel with treatment vs. #1, it all depends on the dealer. Big problem is no one working at the station knows what they're selling. Best bet is to buy straight #2 and treat it yourself, you won't overdose if it's already been treated. I'd be surprised if it was Power Service you saw being added, at least not any that the normal Joe can buy. Buddy of mine drives a fuel tanker, one gallon of the winter diesel treatment he uses treats 10,000 gallons and will take your hand off if you get it on you.

Yes - Power Service

Hi Bill,

I would agree that buying #2 and treating it yourself would be best. I worry about "over dosing" it too.

I have used Power Service and Howes both. I still have about a quart of PS and 2 gallons of Howes in the garage.

I was about 15 feet away from the guy when he opened his cargo bin and got the PS out. He left the door to the bin open while he walked around and poured some from the first jug into the ground. I could tell by the way he carried and placed the jug back into the cargo bin that he did not use the whole thing. It may have been super concentrated. Perhaps he was re-using the jugs and had something else in them.

There was another jug of PS sitting in the bin. It was clearly marked "Power Service". My wife even recognized the jug and commented that it was the same stuff as we had at home.

Some people may not want PS in their fuel. Others may be OK with it. Either way, it would be good to know just in case. Guess it would be a good idea to get to know a dealer well and find out what their supplier is actually using.

Thanks Bill.
