My 04 2500 quadcab was always COLD for 15 to 20 minutes on the ride in or home.

My new 05 will probably be too, any ideas on how to help it warm up quicker before i freeze my X-buns :-laf

Strange, it has been in the 50s the last couple mornings, I usually have some heat within 2 miles before the temp gauge even moves.

last winter, i had several drives home from work [30min] with no heat coming out of the vents until i got home. 50° isn't cold... start getting in to the -20°'s and colder and an engine preheater would be very nice to have [i want one, but it is so much $$$]

Klenger's right, pluging it in is going to help the most, I don't have one, but I suppose a winter front will help a little.

I also agree with nickleinonen, it takes a LONG time to get much heat out of the defrosters. And those engine heaters run something like $3000 don't they?!?!?

I know 50 is not cold, I was just remarking that the engine heats enough coolant that there is noticable heat through the vents in a very short time.

I have had heat within 5 miles when it was less than 0 here last winter and I also never plug the truck in at night. There must be something different with some of the trucks, it is like some automatics can lay rubber and some cannot.

I thought all third-gen trucks have a block heater installed.

Some models don't have the cord (mine didn't) but the plug is on the side of the engine so you can install it on all the cummins third gens. At least I think so. :D

Is a engine pre-heater something different? How do they work?

Heater

If you are calling a block heater a pre heater your truck has one. all you need is a 30 dollar cord from your dealer. If you are talking about a diesel or gas fired pre heater they can be quite expensive, especially the diesel fired. Hot Box is a pretty inexpensive one if you can not get your truck someplace to plug it in during the day. I had one on my Tractor trailer several years ago. :-{}

No EBH installed. was wondering about a grill cover? Does that work? Help warm up time?

thanks

The EBH cord is $10 from the dealer. The EBH is already installed on your truck. Just buy the cord. It takes about ten minutes to screw it onto the heater and run the cord out the front to an accessible location.

Also, my 05 heats up a lot quicker than my 01 did. I think it's the new fan system and the fact that it barely turns when cold.

Plug it in at work!! Mine gets plugged in most of the day at work during the coldest part of the winter. It will start without, but the heater sure works nice after a day of block heat.

OK dealer has the EBH cord and ill get it on there

QWe'll see this winter , gotta figure out how to keep it plugged in at work, think they'll buy me a little generator to run it :--)

Since I sold my motorhome, my CTD has a garage! Im also plugging mine in again this winter. It made a big difference last winter with my 04. I have the block heater in the 04. 5 also. Im thinking of mounting a RV type plug with a flip up lid, like the one in the rear for the trailer lights. It is rather cheesy the way the plug just hangs behind the grill. I want it to be mounted and hidden. Im going to check out what they have at the local RV dealer this weekend and see what I can come up with.

A little expensive but an Espar is the ultimate for comfort. Set the timer and you come out to a warm truck, warm seats, clear windows and an engine that is also warm. It is one of my favorite add ons.

I just added a plug to my block heater and the dealer cost for the 110v harness was $44. 00. Good luck on finding one for $10. 00.
