My windshield wipers are not working all the time on low and intermittent settings, if I turn to hi they come right on, then I can go to low or intermittent and they work fine, I have had them just stop working during intermittent operation, going to hi and back gets them working again..... is this the sign that my wiper motor is on the way out?

This doesnt sound good by the manual.

Check the instrument panel grounds. On my 93 they are located behind OD switch on the metal dash support. There are three wires there one one spot.

Check the wiper motor ground strap. check to see if the motor mounting bolts are tight.

Check wiring ground connections for the intermittent wipe control unit and wiper switch are tight.

If you find nothing wrong there. Replace the control unit. It is mounted on the right side of the column down towards the floor boards. Or that is where my 93 is located.

There are a few tests to the motor you could do. But not knowing how good you are with a volt meter and working with wiring. I won't get to indepth.

Thanks for that, now that I am home and have the manual in front of me it all makes more sense. Page 8k-3 condition motor runs at high but not at low speed seems to be the problem, I do light a test lamp when on low and the wipers are not moving, of course I forgot to grab a meter when I left work so that I could measure the current draw..... but did notice if I tap the wiper motor the wipers start up and run at low speed. I guess I will have to get a new wiper motor, whats a good brand?

I would hit the junkyards and check to see if they have one. If not ask what the interchange is. The way the book looks. It is the same motor for intermittent and straight wiper.

I do not know if there is a aftermarket wiper motor for our trucks!

You could look for some bumps when you notice they don't come on.

well I ran down to Azone and for 59. 00 I got a reman w/lifetime warranty. I plan on owning this truck for a long time... .

Is this the same thing my 90 needs? Mine works on all speeds, but is really sssssslllllllllloooooooowwwwww on the low speeds, especially when you first turn it on.

I haven't looked to see if the wiper motor on the newer trucks are the same as the 86' I had but if it is I had this same problem and it was dirty contacts inside a cover on the wipermotor for the park position, there was a bunch of grease in the motor and it had all run down onto the contacts, I cleaned them up and it was still working 5 years and a 100thousand miles later when I sold the truck. I remember standing on my head to get into the bottom of the motor in the pooring rain many years ago.

Hope this helps,

Caleb

Yea I wimped out by buying the reman, but it all works fine now. It would have taken me a lot more time to drill out the rivets... to see if it was just fouled contacts..... In all my years of driving I have only ever gone to repair shops for alignments and tires.
