Dodge seems to enjoy changing the wire colors and locations over the years... I recently bought a Viper 791XV alarm (mainly for the integrated turbo timer and keyless entry, dont know why anyone would buy a 35K truck without all the tricks but who knows)... anyways, the Viper requires the tachometer wire to be tapped into. From reading several other posts, this is a common problem to find the tach wire. I have read its Black/White stripe located at the PCM on passenger firewall, other say its Dark Blue/Orange stripe located at coil, etc etc... For a 1998 2500 T. D. SLT Quad Cab, where is this wire and what color? The Viper requires it to be on a full scale voltage of 0-12V, however, has an option for reading smaller voltages (instructions suggest Neons and other smaller Dodges have this reduced tach scale). I have read rumors here and there that the 2500 tach voltage is between 0-5V, can anyone confirm this? My second question is that the viper can control the door locks and requires to be tapped into the lock wire and unlock wire... I seem to have found the correct wires in the driver's kickpanel region however when the alarm sends the trigger to those wires nothing happens with the door locks... any suggestions? Im sure I have offended many out there that make a living by installing these systems, however, thats not my intention... whats the fun in it if you cant explore your own truck and take a weekend to customize it? :) any help would be greatly appreciated!!!... oh and one more wire i about gave up on was the wait to start light wire... i dont plan on ever using the remote start feature unless its for showing off to buddies (rather be there in person to watch the rig start up in case something goes boom)... anybody know where and what color this wire is? :) thanks

wheni did mine i pulled the tach wire right behinde the interment cluster i want to say it was white and tan but cant remember and it was on a 96 and it was a low voltage wire less than 5v

as far as the door locks dodges have reversing polarity door locks and most dei alarms dont have built in relays for that type of door locks they just have a 3 wire plug and you are told to use two of the wires what you need to do is get i belive its the 241m module or mabey its the 551t module cant remember ore is a door lock module the other number is a vats bypass for a GM but i cant remember which is which

I have searched and searched behind the cluster for a tach wire. I have read from various TDR sources that there is not a tach signal wire there (but how can that be?). All outside internet sources say to follow back to coils (umm diesel people = no coils) others say find tach wire at pcm. I have had every color of the rainbow suggested to me to find this stinkin wire... anyone know for sure where to find it, and what color?

From what Ive seen with car alarms, you need to get a diesel-compatible alarm that senses alternator current. A diesel does not generate the common tach signal, the only signal (on a 12v, far as I know), is from the crank sensor, and that is a square wave. . Interrupting or tapping from that signal might cause the PCM to puke on ya, I wouldnt do it. Surely a viper has a method of detecting alternator charge, any voltage above 12. 5v would set the pin. . I forget the model of my alarm, it has all the crap on it, but I only use the door unlockers and the alarm/shock sensor portion. Never liked remote start on a diesel. Hmm as for the door locks, I can stick my head under the dash to see how I wired it, I cannot remember the color codes. I think it was a 12v+ system though. (12v+ fed to solenoid to actuate either lock or unlock). I dont recommend using the remote start feature either, unless youre in a 100% warm climate.

hey KHelfrich, where u located in the burgh? I live in brookline, work in Mt washington, and i`m usually drivin around any other time. . I think i`ve seen Truckie in brookline a few times hmm...
