Wire into rear differential...?

I was under the truck the other evening...

... I saw a wire out of the loom that was chewed on by some sort of critter. It is the wires that go to a plug on top of the housing of the rear differential. I am goin to repair it, but what is this wire for? low fluid? part of the ABS? Certainly not a temp probe? I don't recall seeing it on the inside of the housing when I changed the fluid.

No Kiddin??!! At the diff? I thought that was hooked into the transmission?

Nope, its for the speedo. It has a sensor that reads the speed of the ringgear, I think a tone ring? Not 100% sure how it reads, but it is for the speedo.

Thats for the speedo AND ABS. Do you have the ABS and Brake lights on one the dash?

No lights on the dash... yet! The critter did not chew completly through the wires... so a connection is still there. I will need to repair it soon.

Craig- Good to hear from you... any time you want to show me the "proper" way to detail a CTD I am willing to volunteer my truck (LOL).

Maybe a 2005 is different than my 90, but that wire on my 90 is for the ABS only.



The speedometer is taken from the back of the xfer case.

All 98 up Rams the speedo and rear ABS is ran off the tone ring in the rear diff
