>

>Do you remember the hot topic event of 1987? At a lecture the other

day,

>they played an old news video of Lt. Colonel Oliver North testifying

at the

>Iran-Contra hearings during the Regan administration.

>

>There was Marine Colonel North in front of God and country getting the

>third

>degree from the Senate panel, but it was what he said during a

question

>session by a senator that was eerie!

>

>North was being drilled by a senator, who asked the colonel, "Did you

not

>recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?"

>

>Colonel North replied, "Yes I did, Sir. "

>

>The senator continued trying to get a laugh out of the audience,

"Isn't

>that

>a little excessive?"

>

>"No, Sir," continued Colonel North.

>

>"No? And why not?" the senator asked.

>

>"Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, Sir," North

replied.

>

>"Threatened? By whom?" the senator questioned.

>

>"By a terrorist, Sir," North answered.

>

>"Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?"

>

>Colonel North stated, "His name is Osama Bin Laden, Sir. "

>

>At this point, the senator tried to repeat the name but could not

pronounce

>it. A chuckle rose from the audience at his attempt. The senator then

>continued, "Why are you so afraid of this man?"

>

>North answered, "Because, Sir, he is the most evil person alive that I

know

>of. "

>

>"And what would you recommend we do about him?" asked the senator.

>

>North answered, "Well, Sir, if it was up to me, I would recommend that

an

>assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of

the

>earth. "

>

>The senator, of course, totally disagreed with this approach and made

it

>plain he thought North was a complete idiot. Too bad we were not

allowed to

>do so.

>

>The senator drilling North was from Tennessee. His name was Al Gore.

>

>Pass this on. Everyone should remember this!

Yup, Olliver North is without a clue-------just as he was then when he warned about Ben Laden. The guy will just never get right.

Too bad we don't have a few thousand more as bad as he is.

I'm glad Ronald Reagan and George Bush took ol' Ollie seriously and got rid of the problem (Osama bin Laden) before things got out of hand.

One thing

Ollie has been only after two things, rank and fame. He got a bunch of good men killed with his gung ho crap. Not to mention the contra stuff, let me see, how did that turn out?

"I was provided with additional input that was radically different from the truth. I assisted in furthering that version,"

--Colonel Oliver North, from his 1987 Iran-Contra testimony.

At the time Ollie North was giving his testimony, Osama bin laden was not considered a terrorist but rather an allie of sorts. While at war with Russia during their invasion of Afganistan, the Reagan/Bush administration provided him with military aid. Along with Saddam Hussein, Manuel Noriega and a host of other thugs.

Hey, It was sent in a email. I guess someone will have to review the transcripts of the Ollie North inquisition to find out the real truth.

Oliver North's Response to the Email Rumor

"As you will note, the originator attributes to me certain statements regarding Usama bin Laden and other matters that are simply inaccurate. Though I would like to claim the gift of prophesy, I don't have it. "

The men who got killed were in a profession where they knew they could be killed while doing their job. Chesty Puller got a lot of good men killed with his "gung-ho crap" too.

The Contra stuff would have turned out a lot better than it did if the liberals in Congress had let Reagan continue to secretly supply arms to the people fighting the liberals' ideological brothers in the Sandinista regime. Instead, they did exactly what you'd expect them to do and prevented Reagan from helping the freedom fighters in their struggle against Marxist tyranny.

Nobody ever said war, either overt or clandestine, was a nice business. You make use of the most vile, monstrous people you can find, if by doing so you hurt your enemy. The saying is "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and not "the enemy of my enemy is my friend, as long as he's such a nice guy that he makes the Pope look like Hitler. " That's why we backed bad guy Hussein in his fight against badder guy Khomeini, and bad guy bin Laden in his fight against badder guy Brezhnev.

Stupidity?

If a man who risks his life everyday in the line of duty dies of someone elses stupidity or or neglect of a higher ranking officer it is no longer a death for the cause, it is a death by stupidity. A enlisted man goes in the military trusting his superiors to get him through a battle alive, not put him in harms way for sake of his own advancement.

Our foreign policy has been lacking since Nixon. And now comes to a all time low with GW at the helm. The Iran-Contra policy is a perfect example of what "should" get a President impeached. Of course it was swept under the carpet. Including the drug connection that our goverment backed to supply weapons to contras. Sorry, at what price should we start to see the error of our ways? Or should we continue to back this type of idiocy in the name of some misguided patriotism?

Steve M and Bill are correct in Lt. Col. North not making the statement about Bin Laden. I saw North set the record straight on this issue while being interviewed on a Fox cable news show. He stated that it was false and started from some posting on the net. Just another case of you can't believe everything you read on the net.

CF, I don't intend to debate your political views but will take exception to your comment about the enlisted force. I served almost 21 years as an enlisted member. I never trusted an officer to get me through a battle alive. After all, trusted officers die in battle. The reality of military warfare is that people get killed regardless of how great the leader or cause may be. I only expected the leader/leaders to perform their duties as trained and directed and the same applied to we enlisted members. I accepted the fact that I could be killed. To trust an officer to keep me alive would be great if such an officer lived. Wouldn't that be great! All the enlisted would put their trust in him and no one would be killed in a major battle ... except the enemy.

I agree that military members should only be placed in harms way for a just cause (don't wish to debate just cause). When this happens, the leader will perform his duties to best protect his members while inflicting the greatest harm possible to the enemy. This is what I trusted my leader to do and did so knowing that I or others could be killed in the process. I didn't serve with any officers that ever led me to believe that they would needlessly get their troops killed.
