Wondering Steering??? You too?

When I bought me truck it had a bad Track-Bar so I replaced it ($$$$$Stealer). I still feel like there is a lot of play in the steering a "Wonder" as I've heard it said around here. What are the fixes?? Stiffer steering stabilzers, new steering box,???? Someone out there has fixed this one please pass a long the experience

I had to have both the track bar and steering box replaced on mine before it would steer properly (both were done before the truck had 4k on it). It had a lot of slop in the wheel and wandered terribly. I know the 2001 trucks have been notorious for having bad steering boxes, but I don't know about the '96's.

try this -mine went to shop yesterday replaced parts will be ball joints both sides, track bar,right side hub assembly and bearings and the steering knuckle!!!!!!!! this does not make me happy when there is only 28000 on the truck. I told them to check the steering box and they said they found no excessive play. hope this helps?. ???. ?

Bilstein shocks and keep your tire front pressure between 50 and 55 lbs. If it is the steering box then that is a different story. Start with the tire pressure, then add the shocks. I had a new track bar put on my truck under warranty at 35K miles and the tire pressure change and the new Bilsteins got rid of any wonder problem. Hope this helps.

I had VERY excessive play in my steering when I bought the truck. I tightened the adjustment on the steering gear, and that did the trick. Just loosen the locknut, and turn the screw 1/8 of a turn at a time, and see how it is. I tightened mine about 1/4 of a turn. It helped tremendously. It is very important that you don’t tighten the screw too much, because not leaving any play will destroy your gearbox entirely. One symptom of having it too tight is that it won’t return to center when you’re going down the road. Try it! It works wonders! I was very happy with the results. Oo.

My friend John Has a 96 250 CTD and he took his back under warunteee:-laf Some thing let go and when he went to steer the front of the truck would go instead of the tires I'll ask next time I see him

Kenzie, I had my steering problems diagnosed at Turner's in Muncie, Indiana, one of the best medium & heavy duty alignment shops in the Midwest.

They diagnosed the track bar, worn ball joints on the right side, and the steering box, which I already knew about, due to the leak.

All this on a 2001... ...

DON'T get the ball joints or track bar from a dealer ! Aftermarket quality is much better...
