I got a 98. 5 24 Valve . It’s got 15100 and it has **** the bed…. . First the lift pump went up. . I replaced it with a new stock one…ran good for a week and took another ****…talk to a few people here and a guy AZ , and figured it was the dreaded vp44…. so I replaced it with a rebuilt one from Bosh…. so it still won’t start…. Replaced all those crap banjo washers…crack the line into the filter-got gas , than into the vp44 got gas and no air. . Than crack the return line on the vp44 got gas but not like the others. . than crack 3&4 injector and just little drips…. I am kind of disgusted …. . Need some new thoughts!!

Aloha

Have a great New Year!!!

Hi AAron,

Just want to clarify... if it doesn't crank, meaning the engine doesn't turn over when you hit the starter, then it can't be a fuel or injection pump problem.

But, I think you mean that it cranks and won't start. If this is the case I would suggest clearing the codes and attempting to start it. See if any trouble codes come back. It sounds like you've bled the fuel system correctly, but keep in mind if you replaced the injection pump, it takes a minute or two of cranking to fill the injection lines that run from the pump to the injectors. Crack a couple of lines at the injectors and crank the engine for about 30 seconds. Make sure you have decent flow at the injectors. Close the lines and try starting it. If it still doesn't have fuel at the injectors when cranking, but has a good fuel supply to the pump, then there's trouble in paradise with the injection pump. There should be a trouble code set that points you in the right direction.

Good luck.

How long did you crank it over with the injector lines loose?? I have had problems before and had to crack all the lines I could and crank for a long time. Like 4-5 times at 2 minutes each. It might just be a case of needing to crank a little longer with more lines open.

You might also check to be sure the electrical connection to the VP is good. Pull it loose and hook it up again.

Mahalo for you responses guys!!

Hopefully I can work on it tomorrow, been working a lot…Let me clarifiy: the motor turns but she won’t fire…. I have had all the injector lines open and turn it LOTS of times. I’ll try the electrical connections again though…. I don’t think the new pump is bad, but you never know. How do I check the codes with out a reader on my truck(98. 5 24 valve 2500)??? The three key cycle???

Aloha

I don't believe that on a 98. 5 you can do the three key ON, OFF's to check codes but I could be wrong. You will more than likely need to get a code reader from someone or go to your local Auto Zone or schucks to have it done for free.

Good luck. Some times if you just bump the starter the LP will run for about 20-30 seconds. If you have the #3 & #4 injector lines lose eventually it will prime the system, but it might take 3 or more cycles.

I was able to get a "loaner" reader (Auto X-Ray) from Checker Auto Parts by placing a deposit on it ($200?). I believe other parts stores do that too. The key trick doesn't work on '98. 5 or '99s.

Too bad. Did you notice anything else happening when it last ran, such as an erratic tach? That is a sign of a bad crank sensor, which most definately can keep it from starting. If the ECM can't "see" that the engine is turning over, it won't "tell" the VP44 to to inject fuel. If all you can do is throw parts at it, that (crank sensor) is an inexpensive one and the first one I would try. It's hidden behind the starter. If you do pull it out, look at the end of it for signs of a loose tone ring rubbing it, a common cause of it's demise. If it is loose, that will require more work, but we won't go there now. Good luck.

So fuel is just dribbling out of the injector lines even after you crank for a long time?? If that is the case it sounds like the pump is either bad or has some other problem.

Thanks again for your input guys!!! I am still super busy with my jobs (holidays) and now the Mercedes Championship…Next week it will slow down and I will have some free time. . I will try all those things and let all of you know the results…I sure would hate to call someone to fix this thing for me….

Aloha
