Need some advice . Went into smog shop today and being cocky i left the smarty set on performance and it would not pass snap test. I will be bringing it back on monday maybe. I went ahead and put it back to stock at home and did the snap test it puts out a minimal amount of smoke now . Any ideas on what else to do ? Truck is stock other than the intake and air filter. 158k on the clock . Starts fine in morning no smoke and or rough idle . Thanks

Thinking about it it has the POD feature on it . Not sure how I should set it . Thanks you got me thinking now

Running 5-20% biodiesel always seemed to help improve the emission test results on my 2001 in WA state. It was a snap test also.

Why do you feel the need to do anything else? With stock programming I would go get it smogged and call it good!

Something I see a lot of is a GOOD level of soot build up in the exhaust. This tends to show as smoke under hard accell.Do a dozen hard accel events while watching the smoke level in the mirror decrease to nothing, then do a snap test and watch your exhaust smoke level

OK took it back up this morning I could see it wasn't going to pass so I took the Smarty and turned the power level down to 20 throttle was sluggish tech noticed it too I didn't say anything got my paperwork turned back up to 99 and left. As Bob 4X4 said probably a lot of soot in the exhaust and I just didn't have time to blow it out . Thanks Blackbullit for the power suggestion. and everyone else too

For future reference anyone reading this drop the hammer and run the snot out of it to clear the carbon out of the exhaust. Then get it tested. Just dropping the hammer in idle won't do a whole lot.

I did take it out and tried to blow it it out looked pretty clear but tried the snap and still puffed. The first snap doesn't count but still puffed. I wasn't going to take a chance of getting a 2nd ding.

Bob's suggestion is spot on. Smarty tends to fuel so early,I don't think I rev it up enough to blow that soot out.
Periodically,I return my truck to stock for a few days and the higher rpm's help blow that junk out.
Mine will really blow some soot for the first few full throttle runs.

New air filter before test.

Stock as possible before test. That big tune doesn't have a hope of passing a smoke test.

Major missing things in place.

Re-test is always "replaced air filter" for item 'fixed'. With receipt dated after first failure.

Otherwise we watch gov't employees and elected officials pat each other on the back for each "failure" and continue to require expensive yearly diesel emissions tests because the number of failures justifies it. Not only that but, 'modern' diesel emissions here are stricter than Europe for reasons like this. (The emission test costs me more than the plate fees on 20+ year old stuff.)

CA uses a visible smoke 'judgement' call. Yeah fail a couple times and you will have everything stock and still have a hard time passing at a referee station. Of course you vehicle will be unlicensed for months while you go through this. (Say if you do something really stupid like show up without a converter installed when the label/book says thou shalt have one. Then it is go time with a fine tooth comb on everything emissions including cat distance from engine and exhaust diameter factory spec.)

This is why you should think twice before tempting fate on an emissions test. Further even stock engines have a hard time passing (real tests) unless they are in A1 condition.

Older engines weren't designed for snap testing: in fact some have NOx limits on the emissions label, but, no smoke numbers. The emissions tests came after the engine design met emissions standards. Emission exempt Military engines are the worst to try and get to pass a smoke test. Imagine hanging up on the rollers due to lack of power to drive off them from an emissions friendly tune/tune up/settings to pass... I didn't say it was easy - just don't tempt fate.

My 06 with a Edge EZ only had trouble passing Snap Idle when I tried it with a Smarty Jr stacked. On Level 1 with stock tune it passes without issue. Now AZ standards my be lower than CA for the same year has been much easier passing my 06 than my 92 F250 was.

Man I am glad we don't have any of that BS here in the South :)
It's coming. The EPA has 2.5 yrs left. Still no inspections here...yet.
We had some in late 60's I believe. With some of the heaps driving around,I'd almost welcome a biannual vehicle inspection in lieu of smog.

In addition to blowing the soot out with some higher boost/EGT/rpm runs a good tow will also cook the exhaust cleaner.

AH64ID that was what I was thinking just didn't have the time and I was 3 months past the expiration on the registration I did pay it but no sticker. Thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions
