need help here, start truck runs for 1/2 second and stalls.

bled fuel filter, changed fuel filter, open water seperator.

what could it be? when stalls blows alot of smoke and smells

real diesel, sort of like when real cold. Hoping a sensor or something stupid not the pump. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bill

Have you tried bleeding the injector lines? Also, is the lift pump solenoid staying up when you release the key? How long does it crank before starting? What happened just before this started, i. e. did you do a fuel filter change, or did it all of a sudden start acting like this?

Jim

last week had a day where it wouldn't start without letting the pre-heater go 3 or 4 times, just assumed the cold weather.

then one day did this tried to start about 4or 5 times then ran fine , tonight after dinner went to start and won't run. After she stalls, I can hear like a gear spinning real fast thought it was starter, but when got close it's coming from area of fuel filter.

as far as bleeding injector lines, how could they have gotten air in them? usually filter change or run out of fuel would do that.

By the way after I bled the water seperator cranked for about 10 secs till fuel filter got back to full level, then started ran for 1/2 second and died.

UPDATE: the gear spinning noise is the starter. cracked the #1 and #3 injectors, #1 a little bit of suds and fuel, #3 sprayed fuel just like it should, #1??? I'm going to change filter tomorrow.

what is the solenoid? how does it operate. someone asked if it was staying in the up position. What is it suppose to do? I'll check it in the morning. and I'll check the return lines.

thanks for all your help. I'm going to WV to meet a fellow TDR

member from Kentucky on Sun. buying 19. 5 Ricksens. Was kind of hoping to get it running for that trip.

Sounds like air has found it's way in somewhere. If you are getting fuel out of the injectors the solenoid is fine. I'd crank it till the suds stop and pure fuel comes out, may take awhile.
