I have crane operator on my job,she (yes she) asked me if I could help out with this, knowing I'm in the TDR. Well she has a 98 CTD 5 speed 2500. she says that twice already her truck won't shut down when the ignition is turned off. She depresses the throttle a few times and it shuts down. . ???????can anyone help a CTD owner, heavy equip oper, harley riding lady out:p

The fuel shut off solenoid/linkage may be binding, the plunger maybe sticking and or the the fuel shut off solenoid relay (on firewall above fuel filter housing may be malfunctioning). Usually the relay will cause a no start, intermittant start issue, rather than a no shut off complaint. Also, do not concern yourself that the smaller of the two relays has no harness plugged in to it. This is normal on 94-96 trucks the fuel heater uses the "empty relay" I think that model year may also have the "ASD" relay in the power distribution box. You might try another 30 amp relay to swap out to see if this helps. It may also be wiring issues and maybe a bad ign switch.

The shutoff solenoid moves a lever on the side near the bottom back of the pump pump up and down. When the ign switch goes to the start position, then is released to the run position, the plunger in the solenoid pulls the lever up (via the pull coil) and allows the fuel to travel thru the pump. Once the solenoid is retracted (pulled up) another coil acts as a hold coil (less amperage) until the power is removed (key turned to off position).

When the ign switch is switched to off, power on the "hold" coil is released and the spring tensioned plunger forces the lever down, shutting down the fuel supply.

Next time it doesn't shut off, jump out and see if the solenoid is still retracted or pushed down.

Goosing the throttle may have nothing to do with it other than to "shake" it loose and let the plunger fall down.

I think there are photos and further discussions on www.dodgeram.org site.

Good luck,

Andy

Here's the wiring diagram but I'm betting her problem is just a rusted of gunked up linkage or shut down solenoid. A little cleaning will fix it right up.

Just last month I had this problem and the wonderful members helped me. The fuel solenoid switch was sticking. I just sprayed all the linkage and the solenoid switch rod with WD-40, and no more sticking solenoid problems- at least for now. TDR Issue 41, pg. 38 also addresses this problem and offers solutions on how to solve this problem. It also tells how and where to manually push the solenoid switch rod if the truck won't start or shut down.

Cool guys, thanks. I explained it to her and she's gonna check it tonight after shift ends. her mech told her it was her starter:-{} she says its not but he kept saying it was. So I say hold on and I'll get a reply tonight on that. she didn't believe me... thanks for the brownie points guys. :D

Hey Bigdig, I live in central Mass. and used to work at an auto repair facility that serviced cars and trucks of workers on the Big Dig. The one thing they all had in common was the tons of dirt and crud underneath them. This could possibly be making its way to the throttle linkage and causing problems as the fuel solenoid rod is part of the linkage system. Try washing that area of the motor down if there is any amount of crud there. Then lube the linkage and the solenoid rod.

yeah J,that Boston Clay sucks. but lucky for me I can wash my truck at work. she usually takes her Harly in,but its been too chilly in town lately,so she cleened off the webs and drove it in.

I can hear BIGDIG now.....

Bob: "It's okay little lady... . I'll fix yer wagon for ya... . "

CTD/HD owner gal: "My hero, how could I ever thank you. . !!?"

Bob: "Well, my favorite dish is powdered sugar donut pancake surprise..... you could cook me up a batch... . "

CTD/HD owner gal: "Do you want Cheesy Poofs with that?"

Bob: "Yeah I want Cheesy Poofs... . !!!!"
