tried to start the truck today, turn key to on position, bells and whistles all operate normally, wait to start comes on etc. then when I try to start it, there is no resistance in tumbler and nothing happens (no starter, no clicks, nothing) truck is a 94 2500 reg cab 4wd. On a side note, truck now has over 200k miles, and seems to be having more and more electrical gremlins in recent months.

Thanks gents

Matt

First check your batteries. Then, there is a fuse for the starter circuit.

I know the bells, chimes, etc are coming on but if one or both of your batteries has a problem, it will do what you are description.

batteries and cables were replaced earlier this year (when dealing with the TC locking/unlocking issue, and because they were old). I also already checked the fusable link under-hood, that was not it.

Update-

Already got the truck back, it was the tumbler, just plain worn out. I haven't seen it yet, my wife picked up truck for me and said pins that are supposed to catch when turning key were worn pert-near smooth. Just happy to have the truck back (cause my 02 is still in the shop for the second time trying to fix 6sp problem, fortunately thats on DC)

Thanks again gents,

Matt

Fix tumblers before they quit?

My tumblers are apparently going down that path also on 94 with 236K miles. Looked out the window a few mornings ago and saw my intermittent wipers going. Foutunately it had been raining all night. Did not run battery down or otherwise damage. What i discovered is that you can remove the key with it in the accessory position. Didn't always do that. getting worn I suspect.

Question: Does a dealer have to repair this or can I do it and can I keep the same key or will I now have to have two keys to my truck, one for door and one for ignition?

the dealer should be able to replace the tumblers to keep your old key, but I would replace the key with a new one also if it is worn.

i had the work done at an independant shop. (small town, good local mechanic) tumbler was $120, install was $60. I do now have to have two different keys, but that doesnt bother me much. I run two trucks for work regularly, plus a dump truck, I have mutliple keys on multiple locations at all times cause I can be a bit scatter-brained.

My guess is this could be done fairly easily yourself, I had it done because of time constraints, plus my other truck is getting a new 6 spd put in and I am trying to make do with a 1/2 ton 2wd loaner :(
