won't start. Possible FASS pump failure, stranded in Jackson Hole, WY

see the stock in tank pump i far more reliable. and easy to obtain in a pinch...
you need better filtration.
so that pump is 5psi but what volume? can it keep enough flow to feed the cummins?

Thanks again to all who chimes in on this.

had it not been for the collective wisdom conveyed here, my truck and son would likely be stranded in the middle of Wyoming with dead injectors.
Whatever pump he found is clearly underprivileged as is the filter. It seemed like a good idea to me, so
I’m really glad you all helped vet it and shoot it down.
I have FASS overnighting a new unit that he’ll install tomorrow and head home with much more confidence.
Hopefully no dama he has yet been done with the little bit of driving he has done with it. It’s throwing a code for low rail pressure and apparently would
Not shift into 4th gear, so fingers crossed.
Hopefully the unit is covered and they refund the core charge we paid to have the new pump shipped this morning.

I’m not sure if frozen, gelled fuel broke the pump, or if the pump failure was put over the top with some gelling, but in 22 years and 4 Cummins powered trucks this is the first issue I’ve had with cold temps, aside from some hard starts when I knew the injectors were on their way out in my ‘03.

Thanks again team. I’ll update once more with the confirmed fix, but it should be good to go.

Sooo...he's got the new FASS pump in and running, but now it seems to have transmission codes that have it in limp mode, i.e. no overdrive.

Home is an 8 hr drive home, with overdrive. Not that we are seriously considering this, but it'd be double the drive time in 3rd gear, if it made it...

It's stored 2 transmission codes:

P0882 (TCM power input)
P0973 (Shift solenoid A)

The truck is overdue for some service issues with the ATS "upgraded" transmission, but I have no idea who would even look at this up in Jackson. Unfortunately he just got it fueled and running and discovered this issue after businesses are closed.

The add a fuse ATS had used seems to have burned out the spare ignition hot location and he's had to feed the ATS electronics from a new (fused) location.

Can anyone suggest a reasonable way to get this towed to Boulder/ Denver, like a car transport service, even if it has to sit for a few weeks?

I'd hate to drive 8 hrs both ways, and pick it up on a car hauler.

He'll call ATS (again) in the AM, but they cant do much on the phone. We are at a loss of ideas at this point.

Thanks,
Dave

That’s sucks!

Is he sure something didn’t get accidentally removed while getting power for the FASS? Seems like an odd coincidence it’s throwing a power input code.

I’d still say set the cruise control at 2500-2700 rpms and get it home, way better and cheaper than a tow.

Even with 4.10’s and stock tires that’s 55-60 mph, far less than double the drive time.

A Riley created short or power mis management is my best guess as well.

I've encouraged him to keep looking, but he's getting pretty frustrated.

Too bad I didnt let him take the 35" tires he wanted to borrow. It's a dually with 4.10s, but the tires are not that tall. I'll ask him what he's at for speed at 25000 RMP.

Is there any other concern driving it that far in 3rd?

Absolutely not as 3rd is the direct gear, it can run for ever in that gear, and the engine is good for 3200rpm. So run it home at 2600 and enjoy the scream, you are not harming 8t in any direction by doing so.
With a heavy fifth wheel you would do exactly that willingly all day long - plus the heavy load on it.

No reason to have that Truck towed.

But, also, disconnect the battery's and let it sit for a couple hours -or- have some delete the codes. Bit first do the battery thing.

Thanks Ozy. We switched the failing EDGE for a banks eco diesel recently ,and that is how he cleared the codes. They came right back on at start up, but I'll have him leave them off overnight at this point.

Here is some stuff on those codes.

But good stuff above.

Figure would pass these on just in case it helps them remember something that was undone or something simple.

Thanks Tim.

He's away from the truck for the night, and getting up early to send the 3rd gear drive. How long is it worth leaving batteries disconnected to see any results?

This would be happening while they return the loaner car to the host first thing, and be waiting to drive...

Snoking, I’m not certain. I’ve suggested he examine all wires to the transmission closely, but good reminder.
Thanks.

Just disconnect, on both batterys, touch the cable positive and negative together for 5 seconds, done.
Reconnect batterys.

He can maybe swap the transmission relay and check that fuse 5 pretty easily as well.

And TDR for the win! Fingers crossed, but we have full functionality of fuel pump and transmission, with no codes and the overdrive function is back in the house.

Somehow fuse #5 was missing entirely. No idea for how long, or why. Maybe ATS removed it and it shouldn't actually be there, but it's been replaced and working, knock on wood.

Thanks again to everyone who spoke up and weighed in. In my nearly 20 years on this site, I have gotten a lot of good info, but this has been the most valuable help in all those years and nearly 600 posts. Go team.

Excellent! I'm glad it all worked out, and that they had a roof over their head throughout the whole ordeal. Safe travels.
