I just got the bad news that my NV4500, 5 speed transmission in my 2002 2500 pickup is trashed. The input shaft has been damaged due to the pressure plate coming apart as well as
the pilot bearing failing. Does anyone know of a source for used, rebuilt or repairs on those transmissions in the Houston, TX. area?

I believe the place that most use is Standard Transmission in Dallas Fort Worth area. Give them a call they won't steer you wrong.

I just had my 2001 with 267k miles rebuilt by Standard last month. If all you have done is Input shaft, be sure you have the upgraded one installed to make it last. Your budget with dictate how far you go with rebuild. Looking at the box of parts I got back when I picked up my transmission, I would say that the only original part left is the Case. 2 pages of parts lists and labor for $1200 and that included upgraded 5th gear shaft and nut and upgraded input shaft. It's tough making 2 round trips to Ft. Worth, but nobody else in Houston offered the upgrades that are standard issue with Standard Transmission and they come highly recommended by everyone on TDR.

Thanks Cbari and Rbeard. The shop here in Cypress that has the truck has come up with a new front shaft, bearing, seal, bearing cover, I think those are correct part names. Those are the items that the trashed pilot bearing and pressure plate destroyed. It seems New Venture did good when designing the front shaft separate from the internal shaft. I just knew the whole thing would have to come apart. I will look into Standard in Ft. Worth. We travel there sometimes. I did find a place called smartpartsauto.com who will sell a rebuilt NV4500 for $1045 + $500 core + shipping. Too good to be true? One problem I can think of, if I need their warranty I have to remove and ship to them the transmission. Then wait for a disposition.

I looked at and called most of those places prior to doing my transmission. It seemed the easy way out. They are OK but most of them told me that you get a rebuilt transmission with just the parts that were wore out(in their opinion) when they took it in. Very few offered the upgraded parts that broke on mine in the first place and like you said if it frags again you have to deal with labor and shipping back to them. Murphy's law states that the part will last 2 days longer than the warranty. Not a salesman for them, but you can get a totally rebuilt(to the highest degree) transmission with upgraded parts that some vendors don't even know exist with Standard Trans. If you need help with the R&R, you contact me and I'll give you a hand( 2wd not bad,4wd a little harder).

Thanks for the offer RBeard! I think the shop that is doing the work will get me out of a bind but as you say, they are only fixing what's broke. They're replacing the clutch and flywheel and replacing the input shaft and related components on the trans. With about 200k on the clock I'll probably have to revisit the transmission sooner rather than later.
