Worst Fuel Mileage

Last week I pulled a about 17k to central Kansas in a terrible head wind. Fuel mileage was 6. 4 MPG calculated not computer.



What's the worst fuel mileage you've gotten?

I was driving east on I-80 across Nebraska one night driving a Frieghtliner with a 470 hp, 60 series Detroit. I could not stay in 12th gear because the wind was so high. The wind was blowing 30-35 mph from the east. I think I stopped at Grand Island and bought fuel. I figured I had gotten about 3. 2 mpg since I last bought fuel. I went to be until daylight and to my surprise the wind had slacked off. On another trip going in the opposite direction I got lucky and caught that seemigly same wind and got like 7. 0 mpg. I ussually averaged about 5. 5-6. 0 with that truck.



I wouldn't worry about it to much, but when you do push the truck against a strong head wind high gear may not be the best one for your motor. This is where a pyrometer can help save your motor.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that I have the automatic and that was running with overdrive kicked out.

Just changed fuel filters and I had cracked the water sensor. It gave about 10 miles from home and I went through a quarter tank in less than 1/2 mile. So 15 gallons per mile. Or does that count?

Fill'er up between stations. Wow, that could get pricey. :-laf

My lowest mpg so far is about 12. That's with a 4" lift, 315 tires, and 48re automatic transmission. I uasally average about 13 mpg.

Believe I got you beat. I posted last July 20 that my computer said I was making 5. 1 mpg. I was going directly into a hurricane down here around Victoria, Tx. The wind was blowing 85-90 mph and I had a 17k load of pipe on my trailer going to a rig. Like I said in that post, it evened out, I got 22 mpg coming back.
