If you have not looked at the post by Mark on flexplate problems, it would be worth your time to at least check the pics on the third page showing the failed main/thrust bearing.
Good as it is, the Cummins design ain't bullet proof. Not sure what would be a permanent fix on the bearing but clearly it is a weak point. I plan to discuss this with a Cummins rep and see if it has been addresed in later production. I think it would be as simple as using a thrust bearing on the cap portion as well as the block thereby doubling the strength/integrity of the thrust bearing.
