Hi All !

A friend with a 2000 3500, who I'm trying to convince to become a TDR member, is looking for replacement tires for his 3500.

Any 3500 owners have any recommendations that I could pass along to him ? ?

Thanks

Fred

on friday I will be putting on BF goodrich 235/85's I have been looking around and decided these are the ones I want. However alot is going to depend on his driving conditions. For me I am on and off road out in fields as well as long hauls on the interstate so this is the best configuration for me. His best bet would be to sit down first and make sure he knows what kind of conditions he plans to be in and what he wants to do. For some this can really change which tire works best for them.

I know this may be an uncommon opinion, but I really like the goodyears that came with the truck... although I am comparing them to the michelin's that came on my 98. 5 which wore out so fast it is unbelievable...

Anybody recommend a good on-road tire (that doesn't involve 19 inch rims:) )?

ps. . these goodyears aren't great in the mud, but when you've got 6 spinnin' for ya, they seem to keep you out of trouble (as long as your not out LOOKING for trouble... hehehe)

Hey Fred!

I ran GoodYear MTRs on my 01 3500, and thought they were a fantastic tire for what I needed: an aggressive, off-road, open lugged tire that wouldn't quit. I've also run Hankook T34s with great success on other trucks. They also make a 10 ply 235/85.

My Dad runs Firestone SteelTex ATs on his 2500. They also make a 235/85 10-ply. He loves those tires. Not as aggressive as an MTR or BFG Mud Terrain, but they are very long wearing (80,000 kms and he's got 2/3s tread left), and with single wheels, he seems to be able to get pretty much anywhere he wants to go.

Are you sure those 235 BFG will not rub each other in the rear of the truck. I'm not saying they will, just make sure. I would like to get a set of these too if someone knows for sure they will not rub.

235/85's work on the duallies in the back. This size is the OEM size for the 2000's on up. The years prior are 215's, but the 235 will still work.

I hope this helps.

Ben

Yeah the 235's will work on the older ones as well, I replaced the 215's with 235's about two years ago so this will be my second set with them on this truck.

I run 235/85/16's on mine with no rubbing even when fully loaded. The BFG Commercial's are a really tough tire, I have gotten more mileage out of them than any other tire I have run.

Tell your friend to look at the Michelin XPS Rib and/or the XPS Traction, depending on where he is going to drive. These are all steel commerical grade tires that are recapable. very long wearing and come in the 235/85/16 size. Sam's club has the XPS Ribs for $158.

On my 2000 3500 QC 4x4 I had the Michelin LTX/MS and I noticed that with the tread pattern and the soft side wall that the outside thread wore more than the other part of the tire. I had the alignment checked and it was fine. My 2002 has the Goodyear AP tires and I like the tread pattern better, it is more like the Michelin XPS Rib tread pattern with a solid rubber outside tread. I think the Goodyear AP's look like they will wear better than the Michelin LTX/MS's. But I have been wrong about things before, just ask my wife ;)

Michelin LTX-MS 235-85R-16E

Wear just fine and clean out well in the mud. I drive 80% on and 20% off road, and I think these are the best tires for my application. Plus they grip VERY well on wet pavement.

19.5 option perhaps?

Fred, are 19. 5 inch rims an option? If so, I can recommend my own set-up which has Yokohama TY303 rubber and apart from a much better rided than the factory 16 inch set-up, the increased mileage (more than 100k+ per corner) more than makes up for the up-front hit - especially if like me, your friend is going to run his CTD until the wheels fall off.....

Supporting details in truck bio profile, bottom left... .

Later.....

Hi John Mc

Thanks for the suggestions but he wants to stay with the stock set up.

Also thanks to

I have been doing a search trying to decide on which tire to use and have decided on Yokohama geolander AT II's, 235/85/16's.

For the guys with OEM tires of 215 that went to 235's how much did it throw your speedometer off?

I have four questions about the tires.

1. How do these tires wear?

2. traction in snow?

3. traction on wet pavement?

4. road noise?

Thanks,

Ron

I had a $7. 50/tire coupon for BJ's that I used to put BF Goodrich AT's on my wife's Explorer last week. BJ's coupon always says up to four tires so I asked what about a dually? "We don't do duallys".

So Sam's does huh?

I have 215 LTX's on and they wore like that for me too. I need to get into my redneck tire shop for new tires and some politically incorrect conversation. I am going to try the XPS traction in the 235 size.

Ron, I did not check my mileage but it made only a slight change for starting out in low vs 2nd. The 215's made the truck look weenie after having 235 Generals. Traction was still an adventure at best in snow. About the same really. Similar wear patterns too.

255/85/16's fit 2001 + no spacers required.

Road noise ... . cummins is waaay louder

Snow traction ..... Dragged a 4 place snowmobille trailer THRU a VAST trail with a 18" base NO PROBLEM

Wear ... . D/C has a big part in that but they haven't worn well for me because of bad ball joint , track bar , rod end.

Rain ..... no problems whatsoever because of the high voids.

I really like my Cooper Discoverer S/T's.

The tires that were on the rear were Cooper Dis. H/T's. I was getting about 5,000 miles/ 1/32" of tread wear. Haven't checked the S/T's for comparison yet.

The S/T's in stock size, 215-86-16's, are 10 ply and were reasonably priced.

tirerack.com sells these tires for $93 each. Wow that is cheap. Go here for 93 reviews by people that own and have used these tires. http://www.tirerack.com/survey/Surv...Make=Yokohama&tireModel=Geolandar+A/T+Plus+II

I have been running Michelins for years, but when this set wears out I will switch to something else..... I refuse to send my hard earned money to France!

Not much of a change on speedometer for me, I got pulled over about a month ago for doing 80 in a 70 and I think my speedometer had been showing around 75 or so, I don't know for sure as most of the time I just match traffic around me and consider it good. If you jump up to the 255's it might be worth looking at a correction type box. There are some threads floating around about them just do a forum search for calibrating speedometer.

TMTT - What brand and flavor are you running? My truck is occasional hauling/towing and mostly off pavement and winter driving right now. I NEED MORE TRACTION!!
