A friend of mine owns a 01 2500 Ram 4x4 with the V10. He has been complainting about the horrendous gas milege. He has the 4:10 gear ratios.

I have the 3:55 gear ratio in my 99 4x4 2500. My question is this... would It be possible to park the trucks together and easily swap the gears out of the two. I would like the 4:10 and he would like 3:55 to help improve his milege. I want pulling power!!! Are the gears the same in the 99 and 01? How long would it take for somebody that knows what their doing?

I am considering this. With 315 tires I think this would be a better gear for me.

What do you think?

Does yours have rear disc brakes? If yours is an auto then you have the Dana 70 rear end. Are you talking about complete diffs. Watch out for speed sensor on rear axle???

unless you tow a huge trailer... dont do it. I am running 35" tires on the 3:55 gears and still get 18mpg on the freeway... you drop to a 4:10 ratio... and highway crusing is going to hurt ya there. It will give you a little extra up and go, but put a box in your truck, even an EZ and you will forget about gears.

Now, your friend... if he is running anything over a stock size tire... with the v10, he is going to want those lower geared gears. If he goes to 3:55s his mileage will actually get worse.

I've got to throw in with everybody else. The 4. 10 are just to darn low unless you are towing houses.

For a manual transmission yes. For the automatic the 4:10's are much better for towing, as you to not want to apply much power below 1800 RPMs, as the line pressure to the torque converters is too low below 1800 or so, even with my full DTT Bill said to keep it above 1800 towing. At 63 (nice speed for 18. 25K going down the road) I am at 2000 RPM or slightly higher and have almost full torque available.

Remember the auto has . 69 od ratio and the NV5600 is . 73 and NV4500 is . 74. I would not own a stick with 4:10s. The New G56 6 speed has a . 79 OD and with 3. 73's it is like 4:10's, they are going to have to bring 3:54's back.
