200,000 + miles ?! Or maybe a better question would be how many miles is too many ? Should I stay away from trucks with around 230k ? (these trucks go for $9-12k here in the bay area)

obviously it is important how the truck was treated for the first 200k. oil change intervals, warmup before getting on it... that kinda stuff.

my first was acquired at 188k. i was more fortunate than most. the truck was given to me just for getting it out of the guys yard. it had a broken rear spring and major rust damage over the pass. side of the windshield, but she ran absolutely wonderful and other that putting in both rear springs, changing oil & filter, putting on new parking brake cable, fix up the exhaust. . the truck was a nice runner. it had some other minor problems like torn seat. i only had the truck one month and sold it after i fixed it up. the gentleman that owns it now absolutely loves it. he had a small problem with the wire falling off the fuel shut-off solenoid. after he found that, he has had no problems. he gets over 20 mpg and it has a utility body on it.

so to answer your question, find out what you can about maintainence and take it for a ride. if it seems good and the price seems fair to you, you will have a truck that is good for potentially another 100k.

BTW this old truck was the reason for getting my new one. the cummins bug bit hard and there appears to be no cure for the illness. :D

12 valves and 200k miles

Well you don't specify but I suppose that you mean 94 and up--. I can recomend the 93 CTD. I have one with 400k and still going. I have another 93 CTD with 90k and it is nice as new. Only cost 9500. 00 when I bought it and had 68k miles. I believe that if you look around for a nice first gen, you will get a lot more truck for your money, and a better truck. There are some first gens around here that have over 500k. Miles are not what will determine the service you get but rather how the truck has been maintained.

My 97 has 191,000 on it and is in such good shape that I wont get rid of it for any reason except major damage (ok maybe $35,000 would do it). It uses no oil and runs great with nothing wrong on it anywhere. It had 131,000 when I bought it and someone had taken good care of it.

Yes!!! I have about 280K on mine. No major problems to speak of. Oil samples alwayz have came back w/excellent results. Except for a little silicon(which I can't seem to figure out. )

My first CTD was a 1996 2500. I boght it in 98 with 53,000 miles. I have no doubt that the engines on these things will go forever, but the dodge attached to mine was a POS. I dont know if i would buy another used one.

If it runs good, and the price is right....

..... Go for it. I bought a 92 W250 from a TDR member- drove from Calhan CO to Chicago to get it. Had 224K when I got it. Needed a little help, but nothign major. AMikonis and I have differing opinions of "some oil seepage" but other than that, it was in good shape. Averaged 22+ mpg on the trip home in July. Traded it for the 91 I have now- both had 241. 5K at time of trade. Mom's has 240K; guy who bought a 93 W350 from me has a 90 with 600K+. If it makes any difference, my engine had the cross hatches in the cylinders- after 190K running hard and getting put away wet- pulled a 40' GN flatbed, loaded with tractors all over the place. I was set to buy a 97 3500 5spd with 290K, until I told the lady at the bank how many miles were on it; she thought I was nuts for even looking at it, and refused to approve the loan. Thing is, it was priced at $9K (in 01); NADA was 12. 5K

If the rest of the truck is in good shape, I'd have no problem buying one with up to about 500K without any knowledge of how it was previously run. Over 500K, and it may take some salesmanship to persuade me... ...
