Duramax

Hop up a tractor???

Powerstroke

fFirst let me say that I love my 2001 H. O 2500 4x4 but i also have put 130,000 miles on an F-350 ford 4x4 cab&chassis utility truck that weighs 13,500 lbs everyday and has towed as much as an additional 18,000lbs. I dont't abuse the powerstroke or the six-speed but I do work it hard on and off road. The Ford has been a really tough and dependable vehicle ,doing everything I have asked of it. No I wouldn't trade my Dodge for it but it won't bother me at all to be issued a new Ford diesel work truck this fall when the 99 will have about 180,000 hard mile on it. The only reason we are ordering a new truck is to keep the 99 available for a long time as it's replacement won't be equiped the same. We should actually be glad that Dodge has some stiff competition or you can bet they would rest on their laurels instead of being forced to keep moving ahead. Being closed minded about the competition is plum silly.

Couldn't agree more

My brother just bought a 97 F350 PSD Dually and I still love him- I also believe Ford SD styling in the crew cab dually is outstanding

Yes I would buy a ford and I almost did.

I just couldn't get the 4 door long bed in the parking garage at work, and I prefer to tow my 5th wheel travel trailer with a long bed.

If I don't find a Dodge/DC service bay in my area that's capable of fixing my vehicles without me having to resort to the Mr. Hyde side of my personality I will stop purchasing DC products.

I know of a great Ford dealership with a great service bay about 5 miles from my house. I only spent $120 on my last Ford for non-routine maintenancy in the 112,000 miles that I owned it. My nephew has it it now and is very pleased at 132,000.

DC makes a decent vehicle, but the service bays that I've been to do not treat the customers properly or fix the vehicles on the first try.

Nothing about my GM cars have ever impressed me, but I've never tried one of their trucks. After the Duramax prooves itself I will be open minded.

ford

I like the straight frount axle and locking hubs. I like brakes and four doors that the ford has. I have no use for a v eight diesel. I like the in line 6 so that is that. If ford ever installs the cummins in their truck than I will consider it.

I have heard the ford has the cummins in Canada but that may be only a bag of wind. If that were true then how could a person get the truck in the states with out a huge expense?

CF - I don't believe that is correct. The Cummins 5. 9 is available in the 650/750 trucks - at least in the US.

I don't know about the rest of you but I buy a truck, not an engine. As far I am concerned any of the three trucks would meet my power/towing needs. A V8 diesel that goes for 300,000 miles would be just fine with me. I can't imagine that I could kill a V8 diesel and the fact is that we're talking P/Us not Class 8 OTR tractors.

When the time comes I'll make a decision based on my needs at the time. Right now a club/quad cab works fine - no kids - so a Dodge is great. Next truck will probably be a legit crew cab and unless DC gets in the game I'll be buying a Ford or GM.

Have

I have the sales brouchere at work for the 450-550 Ford super dootys, it claims an option for 5. 9 Cummins. Myself, I would not touch a Ford product, seen too many cheap shortcuts in body and interior. A V-8 is made for gas apps not for diesel. Anyone who tells me different can see the difference in power the little I-6 can make compared to the big 7. 3 V-8 . Sometimes there is a substitute for cubic inches, "Design"... ...

If you want four doors, get a sedan... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .

I'll have to check the Ford brochure I have at home - I don't recall seeing the 5. 9 as an option on the 450/550 trucks. I could be wrong.

So you're saying my '00 Quad Cab is a sedan? It sure don't drive like my father's Oldsmobile:D I guess those construction crews I see driving around in 4 door P/Us & Freightliner/Internationals should have bought Caddy's?

Get a grip!!!! Some of us can only have 1 or 2 or 3 vehicles and need one of them to be a pickup (me). I also have kids that need to ride in it sometimes and cannot if I have a regular cab. The quad is too small as they are getting bigger all the time, so a true crew cab is getting to be more needed all the time. If it were not for the kids and buddies on hunting trips I would prefer a regular cab, but my situation requires that my pickup haul at least 5 people in relative comfort.

The PSD will go well over 200K if reasonably maintained, most guys will never have one that long anyway. Cold starts and fuel economy are the only serious advantages the Cummins has for the average guy over the PSD.

Find the worst POS ford you can and I will swap horror stories with him one for one, my dodge has been in the shop constantly from day one. There are good trucks and bad trucks in all makes and models.

Four doors?

I wouldn't buy a Ford just because they have a Crew cab, just like I wouldn't buy a Dodge for the Cummins. Most of the Ford crews I see are a POS anyway. More so if you use them like a pickup should be used. I have seen two that the rear doors will not close if the truck is on slightly uneven ground. If I was in the situation where I had to haul five people around, I would buy a SUV or a mini-van and a little trailer for my gear, before I would buy a Pford. Damn, I would buy a Cheby before I would buy a Pford. That is after Chrysler went under and all the Mopars died.

There are good and bad in all vehicles, I will stay with one make. If you want a Pford, get one. It sounds like some of you are leaning in that direction. I won't look down on you and I will respect your choice. I will however pass you on the hill and chuckle to myself... ... .

CF,

I'm looking at the '02 Ford Commercial Vehicles brochure and the engines listed for F-350/450/550 cab/chassis trucks are the 5. 4V-8, 6. 8 V-10 & 7. 3 PowerStroke V-8 - NO CUMMINS 5. 9 I-6 in the pick-up based trucks. The Cummins 5. 9 I-6 is the standard engine for the 22k-26k & 30k GVWR F-650/750. The 7. 2 I-6 Caterpillar is listed as the standard engine for the 33k GVWR F-750.

NVR

I will check again. I could swear that the 5. 9 was and option on 450-650. Doesen't matter, after talking to a 350 owner on his fourth transmission in six months, Pford is not an option... ... ...
