Speaking of banks

I once cashed a check at the bank it was drawn on. As I was leaving and re-counting (~700 bucks) I noticed the check was also with the cash. I went back to the teller and told her she would probably need it at the end of the day. Needless to say, she was very happy.

Tough call on 100K. I might think about it for a while, but probably give it up. (OK, most of it) I guess I don't feel I need it enough to live with the guilt. It would bother me enough that I couldn't enjoy it.

Flip side, (another bank, another time in my life) ATM kept dispensing money I knew I didn't have. I was broker than broke, living in my car, and hoped I had enough in the account to get $20 out. I couldn't believe my luck. Like winning the lotto. I reported the card lost and closed the account the next day and hoped I could just be forgotten.

Should your situation dictate your degree of ethics?

I could not keep it

If i did not earn it, it ain't mine

In 1995, I worked as a mechanic in Vegas. I was poor and could not have been happier. I worked 11 hour days, 6 days a week. I also took EMT classes and Volunteered for Lake Mead National Rec. Area.

On a Thursday a mid 80's Olds came to the shop on the tow truck. We were busy and would not be able to get to it till Monday or so. On Monday I open the shop and get a phone call first thing. It was the owner of the car, and he wanted me to look under the drivers seat and see if some cash was still there. I go out to look and sure enough a large bag was there filled with cash. I go back inside and call the guy saying I have it in our safe so he could come pick it up anytime during busness hours.

He had over $30,000 dollars in there from his busness for the month. His car was left in the front next too a street. The power doors did not work and his car was unlocked. I did not even think to do anything other than what I did. I now think that all I had to do was say it was not there and kept it myself. It would have most likely caused the guy to lose his busness. My shop manager even told me I should have told him no, it wasn't there.

I am now at a College and my dept. is resonsible for lost and found. We get wallets, purses, cash, laptops, jewlery, and other very valuble idems come through. Everything that comes into our office leaves only two ways. The owner comes and pickes it up or if it isn't claimed it goes to charities. We keep nothing.
