... signs an extention to the bogus "Assult Weapons Ban" sometime in 2004?

At this site there is a poll (about two pages down) that you can make your opinion know.

I for one could not vote for him again if such a bill made its way to his desk. I think he betrayed all Americans by signing the Campaine Finance Reform fiasco.

This "Assult Weapons Ban" law is a joke, it has done nothing but infringe on the rights of law abiding Americans. This is a "Principle" issue and if Bush sides with the PC crowd, I will personally take the day off next election day and stand with a sign at the polling office stating Bush's betrayal of all Firearms owners and vote the Constitutional Party.

I can't believe that such a bill could pass congress let alone get to Bush's desk ... but, one never knows.

If your a Gov't loving, anti-2nd Dem ... please ignore this post.

Good question

Though 2nd Amendment support is the yardstick I measure candidates by, I gotta think that even if Bush doesn't let the AW ban die, I'll still have to vote for him. Tough choice, but he's miles ahead of any Democratic candidate.

And as it stands, a vote for a 3rd party candidate is a wasted vote. :(

I was thinking that MAYBE he was just trying to APPEAR as if he wants to support it, knowing it wont make it to him.

In that event, it's just crafty (though I dont agree with it) politicking. (SP?)

The current ban in NJ is far more draconian than anything proposed on the national level, but I like to think that someday I can move to the free USA.

If he's just politicking, I suppose I'd vote for him.

If he's for real, he aint getting my vote.

When you swear to uphold the Constitution, that means the whole thing. :D

Point taken but...

Ralph Nader drained off enough votes from Algore to help Bush over the top in 2000.

There are no wasted votes, true. 2000 is ample proof of that.

If you mean, he's peeing INTO the wind... . I agree.

You just dont go kick a MAJOR part of your constituency in the nuts and dont expect it to hurt you. :D

I wanted John McCain to win the republican nomination, but I'm pretty pleased with Bush. It takes nuts to go against the UN. Even though I'm a gun nut, I would probably still vote for him if he lets this pass. It's not like they enforce these laws anyway.

Unfortunately, republicans are in a win/win situation on 2nd amendment issues. What is our choice, a republican that does nothing when it comes to gun rights, or a democrat that is willing to turn their back on the constitution, especially the 2nd amendment. The dems will write more & more laws restricting our right to keep and bear arms, but the republicans will not do anything to strike these laws from the books. They’ll just sit back and hope that the dems hang themselves on this issue. Personally, I have never believed that Bush would let the “Sunset” on the assault weapons ban. I think all gun laws are bogus. One thing I will add, ol Bill Clinton & Gore did more for gun sales then any other administration in history. Speaking of guns, I need to go clean my Garand, I was able to go shooting today!

Nope. I turned away from Daddy Bush because of his anti-2nd Amendment actions, and even though it all resulted in Clinton I would do it all over again without hesitation. When I vote, I put my principles first - may be stupid, since 99. 9% of the rest of the country seem to put pocketbook #1, but I am willing to suffer the consequences.

I am disappointed with President Bush for several reasons, although he is a man of apparently good character I am very unhappy at his eagerness to open the borders with Mexico and turn a blind eye to illegal immigration - apparently driven by the big business faction of the Republican party to ensure cheap labor. The entire character of my home state has changed enormously, in a couple more decades it won't be Texas any more just call it Mexico del Norte. I am also unhappy about the buildup of the "Homeland Security" apparatus and the resulting erosion in our freedoms and privacy. Extension of the bogus "Assault Weapons Ban" would just be further evidence that the President is willing to subordinate the rights of American citizens for political expediency.

In spite of my admiration for his apparent strength of character, I won't vote again for a man who is willing to reduce large portions of my home state to 3rd world nation status. I won't vote again for a man who sets up a large and POWERFUL bureaucracy to spy on my fellow American citizens rather than focus on the radical foreign elements that are far more likely to actually instigate 9/11 type acts of terrorism. And I won't vote again for a man who doesn't trust American citizens to own "ugly" semi-automatic firearms that use the same principles as firearms produced and sold by mail-order 100 years ago.

He's got 2 years to change my mind.

What the he!! good does it do to have a party that says it stands for your rights and then sells out when it comes time to vote on legislation? As far as McCain- much worse for gun rights than Bush.

Here in Ohio we have a Repub. legislature that supports Conceal and Carry laws and a govenor that will veto them . Good bye Bob Taft!

BTW the import restrictions on semi-auto firearms happened on Bush' father's watch.

EPA and OSHA happened on Nixon's watch. If many small businesses complied with every ''law'' or rule written after these were passed , they would face instant bankruptcy. --a fact not denied by the enforcers of these laws.

Whoops -- what was this thread about?

If a politician comprises his beliefs for votes the voters should not compromise theirs!

Between a rock and a hard place

It would be nice to be able to vote someone who stands on principles into office. I don't think they'd get elected however. We've got way too many people living under the illusion that they're entitled to government subsidies. They don't want their gravy train derailed.

Scrap the Federal income tax and move to either a flat tax or a sales tax. (I don't car which, both have their warts but are still better than what we have now. ) Get Congress out of the business of writing tax code. That will clean up politics better than anything I know.

And of course, leave guns and gun owners alone!

While you were watching the war, Bush was raping America.

Even though President Bush's approval rating remains high -- 72 percent-- it hasn't translated into solid political support. Only 44 percent of registered voters in a recent Gallop poll said they would support his reelection, many site erosion of their civil rights.

Bush's approval rating is up from a prewar rating of 55 percent, but is still well below the 89 percent approval mark his father reached after the '91 Gulf War. We all know what happened to his reelection efforts.

I don't care who runs against him, he'll never get my vote again. Probably won't happen but I'd like to see him decide not to run so another Republican has a chance at election.

I'd like to see Keyes in the whitehouse. He was far smarter than Mc Cain or Bush in the primaries. I voted for Keyes in the primaries!

Mc Cain and Bush were too busy going at each other to make any sence. Keyes was smart and to the point. IMO he was also right on the mark as far as the content of what he was saying.

IMO the only thing Mc Cain has/had going for him was his war record. He sounded too liberal for me.

I would like to see Keyes/Buchannan. Now there's a ticket!!:D

Colnel David Hunt (Ret. )as sec. def. :D

Yes I would vote for him, but I dont think he would vote in anymore restrictions on guns. Can you say the same thing if McCain, Gore, Kerry, Ms Clinton, or any Democrat for that matter gets into office??? I know McCain is technically a Republican, but he acts like a Democrat.

You guys made me eat my words about McCain. I didn't realize he was so liberal. I guess I need to do my homework before opening my trap. ;)

How about Rush Limbaugh for pres. He'd never run, but I'd vote for him.

principles??????

How does kicking yourself in the teeth equal standing on principles??

Got me real puzzeled!

You say you wouldn't vote for Bush again because of his actions regarding the 2nd amendment?

Lets suppose next election his opponent has a Gore like stand on the 2nd amendment, i. e. he is for LOTS MORE gun control. You have three choices; vote for Bush, vote for the oponent or don't vote for either.

A vote for Bush helps get you someone who while not perfect has a prettty good 2nd amendment record.

A vote for the other guy helps get someone determined to take your guns away

Not voting at all, is in between, which in fact helps get the other guy elected

(Yea, here in Oregon, we recently had an election determined by ONE vote---even on re-count)

How is it standing on principles to in fact help the guy who is much worse on the issue important to you??

It would seem to me that your best course of action is to do whatever is most likely to benefit your overall postion. Hurting yourself is hardly standing on principle----more like just being bull headed.

In the last election, it would have taken only a few thousand guys "standing on 2nd amendment principles" to have given us Gore; wouldn't that really make you feel great about those principles. No thanks.

They have us and they know it......

They have us and they know it! What are conservatives suppose to do? Nobody in the Party will run against Bush - and a third party will get wasted this time - so they're trying to catch some fence sitters. And I agree about Keyes - but I'll bet a lot of folks, wouldn't vote for him because of One Thing!
