what's happened here. They only specify one for my 01....it has been several years since I replaced it,,,but as memory serves me it was under $20......I see the aftermarket ones and they looked like a POS.....

I also purchased one from my local cummins a few months ago, that along with a couple other filters and some of their 50/50 coolant and the guy tells me that will be 243.00. I asked how much was the coolant and he told me and I am doing some math in my head thinking what the heck so I asked him the cost of the items and he ran down the item list the thermostat was last on his list. He just looked at me and said before you ask, yes that's the right price for the thermostat. I did remember them being somewhat expensive for a thermostat from years ago but it is not made of gold for crying out loud.

Please provide an ESN or Vin. I don't have a 2001 Vin for reference. I just tried a 1999 truck and came up with a Cummins 5292742 180 degree for about $40.00.

Maybe the 190 degree version is not popular and costs more when sourced from a vendor. Common parts cost less.

Mike.

3946849 Cummins 190 degree thermostat. Sells for around $80.00. Wow......

I'm going with popularity as the reason....

I'm not sure what else is spec'd with a 190 stat but all VP trucks call for a 190 stat. You'd think between the Dodge pick ups and the UPS trucks that ran the VP44 there'd be quite a few of em out there...

I have tried the aftermarket route and every stat I've ever tried OTHER than Cummins never held 190 for long. Coolant temps were off by as much as 8-10 degrees, and cooler engine temps bring cooler IAT temps which affects timing, and timing affects fuel mileage. It sucks they cost so much, but they're still the best option out there.

Are you sure that wasn't superceded to a 190 stat?

The first truck I used was a '99 and that called for a 180. Part number doesn't supercede to a 190.

Cummins Northeast keeps a 180 (5292742) at every location. No 190's (3946849) at any location.

Just checked the 190 thermostat part number in my '06. That is a 5292744 and that sells for about $30.00. Cummins Northeast has those in every location as well.

That '01 thermostat is not common.

A little peek behind the curtain....

Someone decided that we have been getting along to cheap and not buying enough parts for our trucks! SNOKING

I'll bet the 3rd gen 190 will fit the 2nd gen. I experimented last year when it was cold and nasty with a cheapo 200 degree stat out of a 6.7 and it fit like a glove. Ran it most of the winter with it.

You know some time back I had used a 180....what would it hurt to use that. I know perhaps the ECM algorithim requires a higher temp (like 190) .... but not sure it's required. Don't they all fit into the housing?

Jump onto the Stant or Gates website and check application. If you don't get to it I'll do it when I get home. On the road right now.

If you can wait until Monday I will take one of my old stats up to Napa and compare it to the part number mike posted for the 3rd gen 190. I've had a 200 degree stat for the 6.7 in my truck so I'm guessing a 190 stat from a 3rd gen 5.9 common rail truck would fit as well.

I would run a 190 if I were you. I was sure Cummins updated the VP trucks to a 190 stat for emissions reasons, but Mike proved that one wrong. The 10 degree difference won't make a night and day difference but in theory it should affect the mileage incrementally. Even a few tenths of an mpg adds up over time.

According to this they do list both 180 and 190 thermostat numbers starting with the 98.5 24 valve, so I'm not sure which is the "correct" one to use. You won't go wrong running either one but I still think the hotter stat would be the better choice.

The part numbers Geno's listed are different than what Mike listed, I'm guessing maybe he's got the more recent numbers?

I will run the Geno's numbers this weekend and see where they end up. They have probably worked through this already.

If this were a Freightliner question I could pull up engineering prints to determine the difference in two parts such as these. But being a second party to Cummins proprietary info I have to get creative.....:D:D
