Ok, have taken a few minutes over coffee to play with this. Only on the I-pad so I followed the aftermarket Gates route this time.

Now Gates (who probably makes it for Cummins or did at some point in the last twenty years) shows the use of the same 180 or 190 degree part number from the first 24 valve right up to the end of the 5.9. The 6.7 engines take a different one as do the 12 valves according to Gates. Now am going to try and cross the Cummins numbers into Gates to see which 190 crosses to what Gates offers. I did this first search by Vehicle Application.

Website here, they just upgraded it last month and it works really good now. A lot of good information on it. Start with the "search by application" button on the home page.

If a truck or boat engine(I have two Cummins B150's in our boat) is not running up to temp under light load it is a most likely a piece of rust in the thermostat seat. Cleaning that will create a good spare stat. Has happen over the years to each B150 and my 2001.5 RAM! SNOKING

There ya go Hammersly. Order a 190 stat for a 3rd gen and you'll be golden. I never realized there was such a price difference between the two or that's what I would have done all along. At least I'll know better for the next go around. :)

Since I saved them, I believe they are good.

Wait, you mean you don't collect junk like I do? My SOP is to hang on to something I believe to be of value, forget I have it, and several years later when I come across it again I'll wonder why the he|| it's still laying around taking up space :-laf

Awesome, thanks guys....will keep this in mind....and get a spare one now.

I am using the NAPA THM 375190 in my 2000 (they show the 2001 as the same part number). Here it is $25.39 and comes with the seal. It has a lifetime warranty. I have been running this one for about 2 years and have had no problems with it.

I tried a few NAPA brands and always got a big temp swing out of them. Never held a steady temp and that bugged me. My cheapo 200 stat I bought as an experiment to run on my 98 also swings several degrees.

The "pumping" thermostat seemed to be normal on the 99. It would come up to temp, open , drop a few degrees, close and then repeat. A friend with a 97 noticed the same on his, both with factory thermostats
