Morse Fairbanks made some awesome opposed piston engines that could run and run and run. It's nice to see the idea behind them is still alive. There was a university a few years ago that had built an opposed piston engine that used just one crank. The theory was/ is that the cylinder head is a huge waste of thermal energy. by putting that energy into another piston you reap the reward of higher efficiency, more of the heat energy being put to work. They had built an engine and tested it in a car their findings were quite impressive more power and much better MPG's much the same as this engine in this video says they got out of it. I hope that more people grasp the technology and run with it. And I hope that the EPA can get past the words "Two Stroke" with out killing it like they have other engines. Just goes to show you what is old is new again.

Interesting. What is old is new again, and again, and again. Hope it works this time and its not another Ecomotors or Pinnacle (other OP engine designs going nowhere). I'd also would like to know how much of our tax dollars went into opposed piston engine design, both directly and indirectly: 9 mil, 14.4 mil, 17 mil and those were just the low hanging fruit of a google search. What is worrisome about Achates is that, after 14 years and over 150 million investment, there is no mention of their engine in a real world application or test mule, just dyno tests. Seems odd that they haven’t had any field testing worth mentioning on their website or they have done field testing and the results were not good. I’ll try to remain hopeful since they are supposed to start field testing soon, no for real this time, really, any day now. lol.

That was great! I wish em luck. I wish I saw more. I'm guessing the blower is for scavenging, he kinda hinted. And in the other thread, someone said IG gasoline engines are on the downswing.

Achates Power Inc., on Country Club Drive off 12 Mile Road, will receive a $250,000 Michigan Business Development Program grant.

The company was awarded a $70 million project to develop an advanced combat engine for the U.S. Army Tank Automotive, Research, Development and Engineering Center in Warren.

Another $47 mil of tax dollars to Cummins and Achates. http://www.insideindianabusiness.co...to-design-combat-engines-that-elude-the-enemy

Considering all the tax dollars (federal and state) being thrown at Achates I sure hope that engine is successful! (And Country Club Drive? Seriously? Our tax dollars hard at work, lol.)
