I'm thinking it would be a real hoot to transplant a 1st gen drivetrain / axles / steering gear into the PW... make it a cummins Powered Wagon #ad

Anyone seen one?

Mark, there is a guy in Sacramento that just put a 93 into a 75 power wagon. Looked like it fit in just fine. He used the engine and transmission both. Cummnzpowr can tell you about it, it is a friend of his.

Oh man, just do it! I am a powerwagon nut, and hope to one day have the funding to do my own conversion. If you need help, Dr. Aarons out of Alaska can give you the best advice and can be found on the powerwagon page. There is an archive on that forum they have that discusses a whole raft of options for many of the older trucks, but the info is great. Just post your idea on their free forum, and read away. Good Luck; just imagine all of the necks that will break every time you turn a corner in that rig!

yeah i just got done with my truck the cummins fits really well in the 75 crew cab pw. i to have a 67 crew cab pw with a 383 and 4 spd. it will take a lot more work for the 60s era. the cross member for the the trany will have to be redone the 75 didn't. i haven't checked to see if the cummins will be too long to fit without mods' done there also. my plan is to find a wrecked 99 or 00 24 valve 6 spd complet less body and just drop my 67 body on it with only a few mods'

------------------

1975 crew cab power wagon had a 440 now has a 93 cummins atuo trans. 6" lift 33" swampers pw seats pw locks. pulls a 30' gooseneck trailer. lots of fun.

Well, there's more than "just doing it".

It takes money, parts, skills, and materials to do all that.

It would be cool, though. Would make a pretty cool article and/or website covering the conversion process.

Go for it, the frames are mostly the same from 1973 to 1993 (72 the frame rails are closer together). Also if you are working a Crew Cab the rear doors COMPLETELY interchange from 72 to 85. You can even bolt a door from a 70's truck on a 80's and 90's truck(the upper body line isn't there on a 70's door but it will work)as for the rest, if you wanted to cheat, just buy a rolled 1st gen Cummins, and bolt on the body from a 70's Power Wagon. The down side is you get the 70's wiring harness which is a pain in the rear Axel #ad
. The fuse for the blower motor always seems to melt the fuse box. I did the reverse to a 78 power wagon that the body was completely gone, but had a great drive train. I put a 1984 4X2 Body on the chassis, and only thing I had to do was beat the floor pan up so the transfer case would fit, the rest just bolted on, no cutting(except for the transfer case shifter) or drilling ! If you have any questions drop me a line. Kyle

1985 DODGE 1 ton Crew Cab(imported from California with no rust) W/8' box converted to 4X4(wasn't that hard to do!) in 1999,converted to a 1991 Cummins Turbo diesel & 5 speed Getrag in 2000(wife can't drive a stick :). 4:10 gears, limited slip rear end, 205 transfer case, 16" Goodyear GSA Wranglers and LE Package and a Sony CD Stereo. A one of a kind truck(Wish Dodge would build a new Crew Cab in 1 ton. Last year for the Crew Cab was 1985)If you want to know why I did all of this, 2 kids, one on the way and I can't stand Ford and Chevy. Kyle Hoover ,Fruitport, MI

Opps, can't help you with a 60's truck, but I am sure it can be done if you got the tools, parts, etc. You might want to use a non intercooled motor to start with, alot less wiring to worry about, and no computers #ad
.

The rear frame spacing on the '65 is the same as my 78 D150, because I robbed the frame mount trailer hitch, and it bolted on with only adding 4 more holes.

The engine and transmission mount entirely different. The engine has 2 "normal" mounts in the front, and then there are 2 ears on the bell housing that mount to a crossmember. The transmission has no mounting except the bolts to the bell housing. The transfer case is mounted completely separately on a large crossmember.

General Diesel,
You really don't need to find a wrecked 4x4 since you have what I have heard refered to as a divorced transfercase, as long as the transfercase is far enough back for a short drive line behind whatever transmission is on the Cummins you find you can just bolt it in. Of course you will probably have to update the axles at a future time or be very careful with all the torque you will have.
(I want to build a 48-54 cheby cabover w/cummins and sleeper, only in the dreaming stage so far. )
Good Luck,
Caleb

I need to replace the axles and the transfer case... The truck needs more brakes, the transfer case is bad, and the drivelines and ujoints will not handle the power of the Cummins - especially a BOMB'd Cummins #ad

So, yes, I do need all those things.
