WRONG FUEL FILTER. Need suggestions.

I got two fuel filters at the local cummins shop, but since this was my first change with this truck, I didn't realize that they gave me the wrong ones. As you all know the o-ring swells to form a tight seal and I'm having trouble trying to put the old filter back in.
Of course it's 4:30 in the afternoon and none of the local auto parts store have a filter for this truck. Anyone got any bright ideas? I,m suppose to go down to southern Virginia on X-mas day (a 4. 5 hr drive). I'm sc***d if I have to wait for Cummins to open on Tues. Maybe Santa will bring me one. Now where's that number for the North Pole? Thanks in advance. Tom

Tom,

I posted a reply to the other filter thread. You should be able to reuse the original o-ring if it didn't get abused when you pulled it off the lid. Clean, re-oil and reinstall. Turn it down finger tight and run the lift pump. Check for leaks.

Now am I worried about not using a new o-ring. I am going to drive my truck around this evening and tomorrow AM and see if it leaks. If it is still dry tomorrow you are welcome to my o-ring. Let me know, we can figure out where to meet halfway.

Go down to your local NAPA and get a #3585 filter.

Dave, I posted a reply to your reply on the other thread also. The o-ring had swelled too much. I did get the '99 o-ring to work, but I'm not very comfortable with it. I'm hoping that TA truckstop in Jessup might have a filter. We'll see. Where is Seabrook? I might have to take you up on your offer.
n7gxs, Unfortunately I didn't think to call napa. It was getting a liitle late and they were probably closed. I keep it in mind for next time though. Pep boys had a filter for hte '99. 36 BUCKS! Yikes!

Seabrook is near Route 50 and the DC Beltway. We are going to be heading up to western PA tomorrow afternoon. I think I am going to be taking the BW Parkway up to 32 and then 32 to 70 west.

When I had my filter off today my o-ring didn't look very swollen, it was just about the the same size as the new one. I just cleaned everything up and coated the old one with some clean oil. I tightened it by hand as far as I could, couldn't find my 3/8" to 1/2" adapter to use the torque wrench. Felt good when I turned it down. No leaks. I drove the truck about ten miles tonight. Still dry. I have to run some errands before we take off tomorrow. If it still looks good tomorrow maybe you can meet me somewhere along the way if you want the o-ring.

From now on when I change the fuel filter, I will use the new o-ring. From the looks of my filter at approx. 9K I will be changing about every 7. 5K.
