Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) wrong oil - need advice

No need for boxing gloves on this one, I'm not asking about brands, but I do have a question about grades.



I had the oil changed and I believe the wrong oil was put in the truck. The oil is Valvoline Synpower 5w-40 fully synthetic with an SL/CF rating. It is rated for diesel, but I was in such a hurry in the shop that I let the guy behind the counter recommend it without doing my diligence (bad. )



I drove it about 200 miles before I realized the mistake, and I'm wondering if this is something that I should change out immediately or if I can make it a couple thousand miles and just change it sooner than normal.



What is the difference between CF and CF-4 anyway ?

Just kidding Damon. Unless you're seriously abusing your truck, like heavy towing or drag racing, there shouldn't be anything wrong with running it till the next regular change. You're not going to knock any appreciable amout of life off your motor.



I bet somebody will argue this, but that's because some folks just like to argue. :-{}

I gotta admit, I about choked when I read the first line of your response - got me

I couldn't resist, it was too easy....

But I'm kinda surprised. I figured by now, somebody else would start flaming me, talking trash about additives and specs.



Truth is, almost any "good quality" modern oil will supply adaquate lubrication. There are differences in the specs for detergent level, acidity, suspension of crud like soot, but short term it's not gonna make a difference. If you ran it the entire life of the engine maybe, but 3k out of 300 ain't nuthin. Ok, so what if it woulda made 301k. Danged if I'd lose any sleep over that one. See Ya!!!
