WTH ?? GREEN Diesel Fuel !! ??

Bought Diesel for Less Than Regular Unleaded Gasoline Today

Went to fill up at my local station yesterday and I noticed the fuel that was dispensing was GREEN !!!

It looked exactly like GREEN beer on St. Patty's Day !!

I buy most ALL my diesel from this place and it has a relatively high fuel turnover rate, so I think it's HIGHLY unlikely to be contaminated with bacteria or whatever.

The fuel I bought before this was normal diesel off-whiteish colored.

Anyone know why it's now GREEN ??

The color of a diesel fuel is not related to its performance. As long as the fuel meets specifications, it will perform well in your engine. The natural color of diesel fuels has traditionally varied from colorless to amber. As refinery processing of the diesel fuel increases to remove sulfur the color has tended to get lighter and the diesel can change color. When it changes color the diesel is typically light in tone and can be green, orange or pink. Sometimes it might show a slight fluorescence when held up to light. Such a change in color does not affect the quality of the diesel.

BTW, my truck is running MUCH stronger and smoother as well.

Could this be the effects of the new ULSD perhaps ??
 
Dye

Most refinerys do dye their fuels to help designate type of fuel, ULSD, HSD (red), fuel oils (sometimes orange), and so on. I would not worry about color, look for haze (this is usually caused by water), different shades of color, smell (should smell like diesel, not kerosene, not gas), if possible take a clear glass bottle with you and fill it from pump, look for above signs, or any sediment in bottom. If you have problems with said diesel, take it to your local station (or jobber supplying station) and tell them about it. In some cases they will send sample for further analyses. A lot of changes going on in the ULSD requirements right now, many additive packages, many changes in gravitys, flash, and dyes, we are trying to roll with Uncle Sams new fuel requirements, please bear with us... :D
 
Yup you weren't seein things- I noticed it too last week. St. Pats Day beer was what I thought of too. It was GREEN. Katmandu- I see you are from OH. - were you filling at a Kwik Fill or Red Apple?
 
i've had green fuel, blue fuel, orange fuel [this one scared me - pumpkin/rust orange], yellow fuel & red fuel :eek: run through the diesel engines we have had... at work we have blue fuel, and when you mix blue and red you get purple fuel...



if it smells like diesel, and feels like diesel [and tastes like diesel] it must be diesel ;)
 
Back when we were top loading at the pipeline we would see brown, green,orange,& clear. & even some with a blue tint. That was back before low sulpher D/O. Each supplier had a different hue to their D/O. Shell was the worst smell of sulpher (rotten eggs) sometimes it would gag you if you didn't ease into the loading handle & let the compartment fill some
 
The diesel has many different colors when it is first distilled. Depending on the crude it is being made from. I have seen clear, looked smelled the same as jet and gasoline made at the same time, Minas-type crude (low-sulfur), all the way to dark green and even blue. Many different compounds can cause the change in color. A lot of the time it is the amount of nitrogen and or sulfur compounds.

Rest assured, if it comes out of a high vollume dealer you should be okay. :) Good luck, let us know if any changes are noticed. Most diesel should start changing over to the low-sulfur.

Another thought just occurred to me as I was writing this, too much air exposure can also cause color changes. Just a thought.

The first time I saw blue jet and diesel I had to rerun the spec tests twice, even then I still had our process engineer and Lab run a lot of tests. The diesel and jet were just blue, based on the types of crude being processed. Hope this helps.
 
Have always pumped green diesel in my neck of the woods... . errrr, city...

I actually thought this was the color of all diesel. Shows my intelligence level. .
 
Here in Iowa the on road taxed diesel is green. Off road non taxed diesel is dyed red. The DOT in Iowa will stop diesel trucks and dip the tank to see if you are running dyed diesel. 1,000$ fine for running dyed diesel in on road truck. I Know some one that was caught running dyed diesel.
 
i still want to know what gives dot the right to stop u and dip ur tank? does it say somewhere that when u get a license or registration that you gave them the right to stop u at anytime?
