Any one watching the Ken Burns' Doc on WW II? I find it captivating to say the least. I never realized the gravity of the situation and how much there was to lose. It is easy to be lulled by the highschool history books giving an overview of the situation and not fully understand how many mistakes were made at the cost of many men.
My families didn't suffer any loss of life on either side. My grandfather and his sister were born in Germany, stayed until they were 10 and 12, then came to NY to be with there parents, who had gone ahead and started a business. Before he died I asked him about what it was like durning WW II in America. Needless to say he didn't get into much detail. I can't imagine.
My Grandfather and Grandma, before they were married, went to Germany to spend family money that couldn't be taken out of the country. I think it was about '34-'35. I never heard any stories about this trip, only my mother saying that they had to cut the trip short.
