well i thought id put this out now and start getting familar w/ some people in wyoming laramie in paticular since i will be up that way for sometime starting april hopefully. i will be going wyotech (either april or july) study the very subject that we all can talk for days on end about diesel thats just where ill be starting will go on to other subjects too like high performance and chassie fab. but that another thread all id like to know is people in the area that i can get to know in case i every need some help w/ the area. so let me hear whats good up there and what i should pack.

Thats were I got my assoc's from in Diesel tech back in 01. Excellent school. I now live on the other end of the state. Had lots of fun in laramie. If you like outdoors stuff and have a good 4wd then there are lots of places to go exploring. The snowy range was my favorite area. If you have any ?'s PM me.

Lived in Cheyenne for three years. Don't think it stopped blowing the whole time I was there. Winters can get a bit cool, with the wind and all . Had a guy once ask me "Is it always this windy". Actually had to stop and think about it; hadn't even noticed the wind was still blowing about 20mph.

You are right about being goods country though. God mad it and then forgot it. I grew up in laramie and still enjoy visiting. If there was more industry (Jobs) I think I may still be there. I live in CO now . Buy the wind breaker(carhart@Martindales, tell them RAFA sent you), a fishing license at the Fly store and enjoy beauty that is wyoming

Are there any community colleges near you with a diesel program? If so, I would definitely go that route. I am not even slightly impressed with guys I work with that went to Wyotech, UTI, or other tech schools. However, the guys who went to one of the 3 or 4 community colleges in the area by comparison are much more well rounded, think better on their feet, and are much better at troubleshooting. Just MHO.

well it looks like im really gonna enjoy this area i love cold and the great outdoors i will be doing some fishing hiking mtn biking and paintballing if there any feilds near by and 4wheeling since im not leaving till i get my 4x4ctd i would go camping but that requiers a few days and i doubt ill have that much time.



as to the school, i so far have heard pretty much all good the biggest thing i was told is that you get out what you put into it so if these guys that roadgoesonforever knows maybe didn't put all into it i don't all i know its the highest rated school in the nation then maybe when i get out ill be on here telling everyone about some new product im testing like the one guy talking about that sweet stainless header

The only good thing I have heard about these big tech schools is that they have some good performance classes for racing and such. The problem comes from having too big a class size and too short a period to learn everything. Have you even looked into a community college?

I went to Wyoming Tech in '95-'96. Took Diesel, automotive, and ASM. (Outstanding Student Award *toot toot*)



The program is very fast paced and truthfully you won't be able to absorb all the knowledge thrown at you. Take good notes---for the record the manuals and materials they give you are top notch--I still have mine and refer back to them from time to time.



The biggest thing about Laramie is there's not much there, and it's very easy to get sidetracked from your studies by all the partying that will go on.



Be prepared to bust your *** if you want a good education with knowledge you can take with you. The program is definitely not for everyone, and I too have worked along side other Wyo Tech or UTI grads who I wouldn't trust to tie my shoes let alone work on my machines. Real world knowledge that precedes your tenure there will help greatly, too. In fact I think many of the people who come out of that school 'clueless' are the ones who got there & realized they were WAY behind the rest of the class.



One thing I'll stress---ASK QUESTIONS!!!!! The instructors will gladly go over everything until everyone has grasped it--within reason--but if you don't ask a question they'll never know you're lost and will move right along at Mach 3 to the next topic... . so ask.



There are many great tech schools out there, the nice thing about Wyo Tech is it's like Harvard---sure you can get a great education at many other universities but the big H will go a long, long way in your benefit, especially come graduation time.



I'm a 10 year alumni and can still say I'm glad to have gone there for my diesel education.

Good luck with your schooling. You might also consider a college degree in something else as well to keep yourself well rounded and capable of moving up or changing careers down the line.

honestly i don't know who rated it the highest in the nation nor do i know why the guys you worked w/ are not that impressive all i know is from talking to people is that it seems like the one guy said the big h or in this case the big w makes a difference to the employer. as for a community colledge i looked at a jc near me and was not as impressed i liked the fast pace of wyo and the support they provide after wards . basically it looks like a good school and again im sure it wouldn't matter to much what school you go to as long as you apply yourself again i don't know about the people you know and i don't discredit what you say but if its not any better then the next school at least the name will look better to the guy hiring me.



it is a fast pace but i grasp things quickly ask lots of questions and am never afraid of a challange getting dirty or putting in my hours.



i am thinking of maybe some computer classes here at the local jc before i go to wyo and maybe if i could get into it some there at the colledge thats there too just evening ones that would help round out my education im still feeling that all out tho and again thank you all for the replys and keep sending the advice i like to hear all sides. im very open for 18

If I may offer a little constructive criticizm, I'd advise taking the time to attend an English class for punctuation and sentence structure. Even if that meant attending an evening class. Doing so may not help turn wrenches, but it may help when the shop foreman/manager job opens up and it probably will help with turning wenches.

On a serious note, you guys are lucky to be up there in WY. Keep it rural while you can. CO has become more ruined every year, IMHO.

Do some research and you will find that Wyoming ranks at or near the top in every major rating for public education. Sent some letters years ago to many ranchers looking for places to hunt and all had perfect grammer and neat hand writing. Most were older and no doubt rural. They take pride in their schools. DW

That must not of been any ranchers I know .



My wife and I are from Wyoming, both from ranch families, both moved away to the big city, and now moving back. One of the reasons we are moving back is, my wife is a teacher, Wyoming is struggling to hire new teachers, and they are about to have a big surge of retiring teachers. That translates to Wyoming taking care of the teachers they have, and recruiting pretty hard.



I have many friends that went to wyotech, one of them is now a heavy equipment mechanic, the rest are not. I think it does boil down to how serious you take it, my friend that is a mechanic didn't party much and wasn't a know it all. The school helped him get a job after graduation, and he still works at the same place for about 7 years now. It's an expensive school to go to for how short it is, so make sure you pay attention and get your money's worth.
