Did I overfill it? (The Transfer Case)

For those of you that have the X-Monitor installed, what kind of 48RE transmission temperatures are you seeing? Unlike my 2nd gen truck where I had the temp probe in the hot line going to the cooler, the X-Monitor is hooked to the transmission thermistor output to the ECM. I'm wondering just how accurate this setup is. My 47RE usually ran about 130-150 depending on outside temperature and that was taken at the hottest point. My X-Monitor shows 160-170 degrees in similar driving conditions. I'm not sure exactly where in the transmission the thermistor is located. The manual says it is always immersed in fluid and turns on your dash warning light if the temperature reaches 275 degrees. Just curious what others are seeing for transmission temperatures on the X-Monitor. Thanks...

It is in the upper right hand side of the valve body. I have my SPA sender mounted in the pan pretty close to it and see the same temps you do.

This has always confused and concerned me some on the location of the probe for correct temp read out. I have the X-Monitor and the 47RE trans, even though it is tied into the stock sender from what I understand (did not do the install myself) my reading are a constant 130*-150* range unloaded depending on outside temperature. Last August I pulled my 28ft TT in 97*F outside temps and the highest recorded reading I got was 160*F on the X-Monitor. I sure thought it would read higher pulling a load. If I'm understanding Ron's post he also was getting the same temp readings (130*-150*) on his 47RE trans with the probe in the "hot line" going to the cooler. Is this correct.



Also why does DC set temps so high before the dash warning light comes on. From what I read on other post 275*F is asking for trouble. :confused:

Thanks for the replies. Tony, that's right, on my 1996 47RE I only got 130-150 in the hot line. It never went above 150 towing my 13,000+ fifth wheel on the highway. Stop and go with the trailer would get up to 170 and parking the trailer I sometimes would hit 200. I think my X-Monitor is pretty accurate. This morning after the truck had been sitting in the garage for 2 days I turned on the key without starting the engine. The trans read 66, the pyro read 66 and my overhead outside temp read 66. I think the 48RE must just run a little warmer. I notice the cooler setup is not the same. The water to fluid tank looks larger so maybe it helps to warm the transmission better. I always thought my 47RE ran a little too cool. You need to get warm enough to evaporate the moisture.



I also did a search on "X-Monitor" and got a lot of interesting information. So far I like the unit even though it was not the easiest thing to install. I did have some erratic readings at first. Temp numbers would jump up and down 4-5 degrees at a time. I removed the ground from the dashboard metal and ran a wire straight to the negative terminal on the battery. That cured the problem.
 
My X-Mon has allways been very accurate. The tranns temp is the same as the pyro and air temp after sitting over night. My 48-RE will run at about 170-180 range during empty freeway travel. With my 12000lb 5th it has climbed as high as 205-210 range pulling the grapevine on I-5 and during heavy traffic for long distances. It seems a little two high for my taste. I run a Mag hy-tech pan, but it made little or no differance over stock (takes a little longer to reach those higher temps)



i thought the install was very easy. Hardest part was drilling-tapping the pyro sensor, but that wasn't bad. Ive been very happy with it. once it was painted everyone thought it was stock. Even had a dealer service writter ask my when DC offered it.

I have never compared my trans,pyro,and OH temps before. I guess never gave it a though. Usually get in turn key on wait for grid heater light to go out and crank it up, all this time the X-Monitor is running through it's start up cycle. I'll try that after the truck sets over night to see what kind of readings I get.

Jason, did you paint yours before you installed or after? I didn't paint mine and I'm wondering if it's too late. I don't want to take it all apart again. Right now it matches the dash but not the pillar. I don't know if it would look better painted or not.



BTW, when I said it wasn't the easiest to install I didn't mean technically hard (don't want to discourage anyone from installing their own) it was just a tedious job. Fitting my hands in small places, removing the cast turbo down pipe for drilling and tapping (easy to get off but tricky to put back) so I could do a post turbo pyro for monitoring cooldown and using a lot of cable ties and doing careful routing of the wires involved.
 
Dnerd, Yes i painted mine to match the pillar. It took 3weeks to get the paint from canada, something about the paint chemicals and crossing the border. It made a huge difference. I didnt rivet it to the pillar though until it was painted. My buddy that owns a shop said those plastic rivets are a one time use only. So i guess you would need new ones. But the paint matches perfectly and looks very stock.



I used grease on my drill bits and tap, cleaning after each with a maganet to catch any shavings. So i chanced it and did not remove the turbo. I have done it this way 3 times and never had a problem. Everyone i know has done i the same way and never had a porblem. But to be sure i guess you would have to remove the turbo.
