X-Mount Mirror Install Tips/Tricks?

Just rec'd my X-mounts - darn those things are big. Besides the tools listed on the instructions are there any other tools I'll need? How 'bout any tips/tricks for installing these on my '00? BTW the mirrors are elec/heated.

Meant to ask in the original post - do I need to go buy the xmas tree remover to get the door panels off? Should I just buy new xmas trees so I don't have to worry about salvaging the current ones?

Do you know if the newer style mirrors or the X-Mount's are direct bolt-ons on our '94's?

NVR FNSH, The door panel tool helps but it's not necessary. I bought one from a small auto store for $6. 00. I also used a 90 degree thin prybar with duct tape wrapped around it. The xmas trees can be removed several times before you can't use them anymore. But in case you break a few it's easier if you already have them in hand before you start the job. They are about $1. 20 each. I went overboard and bought 12. Only needed 2 but used 'em for bent ones anyway.

Yes, a direct bolt on. They come with the reinforcing plates too.



If you want the heated version, they will sell you the mirror with a '94-'97 connector with the heater wires hanging. You will need to build a timing circuit, I sure some of our electron tamer type members could help you out. I was told it would be "easy".



I had a set of non-heated electric X-mounts on my truck in March. I didn't like them or the service I received from Lucerix, they were frighteningly clueless. I returned them for several reasons.



When I called a couple weeks after returning them, I got conflicting answers to my questions and only 1 of the 3 defects were addressed.



I guess they're OK now but I'll wait to see if DC manages to get a power, heated towing mirror on the 2002s.

Bolt up, yes. For the '98+ DC power mirrors:The electrical connectors are different and they might require the reinforcing plates which are available from DC seperately.

You might be able to do the swap without removing the door panel, most owners of newer trucks can. My panels tried to jump off and ended up hanging by the door handles.

The instructions from Lucerix are pretty clear, no special tools needed. Be careful tightening the bolts don't overdo it. They are way too small imho and screw into a thin sleeve moulded into the housing. Also get someone to support the mirror while you do the install, makes it much easier. Good luck!

The 98+ mirrors will fit the 94-97 doors just fine, either the power heated (as I now have installed wiht out power or heat) or the flip up towing mirrors (good luck geting any).

The standard electric powered units do not require a reinforcement plate. Only the flip ups require added support.



If you go for the electric ones, the connectors are made by Yazaki. My contact at Lucerix faxed me a spec sheet from the X mounts. I'm still trying to source these Yazaki connectors though. If you're interested, I'll let you know.

Tips for installation include:



1. You don't have to remove the door panel. I used a roll of paper towel to hold the panel away from the door.



2. Fold a paper towel and slide it into the indention where the nuts are that hold on the current mirrors. This blocks the two square holes that will allow the nuts to fall into the door. That's a bad. Don't remove the towel until installation is complete.



3. Make sure the wiring harness runs through the padded opening in the back plate.



4. You'll need to saw off (unless this has been corrected) the tips of the mounting bolts on the passenger side or the panel won't fit back against the door.



5. When you tighten, do it carefully, each bolt a turn at the time after there is tension on the mirror. Gently wiggle the mirror as you tighten so that it seats properly.



6. My top bolt on the drivers side was too short from Lucerix. I picked up the right length from NAPA. It was about 1/8 longer but the supplied ones were too short to start. Wish I had the longer one before I started.

The <em>heated</em> mirrors sold in that package will fit all trucks 94 to present. I believe the adjust switch is the same. The heat control panel may or may not work in a pre 98 model.



I haven't been working on a timing control for the heat circuit yet. It is now cool enough on some mornings for the intake heaters to cycle. When it happens everyday then the priority will move up to get the mirrors powered.
