X-tra Tank Installation and Transfer

I need some direction. I bought a plastic tank from a 89 Ramcharger that I am going to use as an auxiliary tank. After installing the tank in the truck, how do I go about setting it up to transfer fuel to the primary tank?



Initial plans were to install a hose into the tank, to the transfer pump, possibly to a filter, and then to the primary tank. What I don't know is: Can I eliminate the fuel sending unit from the ramchargers tank? Can you take it off, and still keep the lid of the tank? Also, is there a port on the top of the primary to dump the fuel into, or is there a better way of doing this.



Another thought was to install a door on the side of the bed and just install some kind of valve/switch to go from one tank to another, but I really dont want to install the second door on the side of the bed.

Auxillary tank

The first thing you better check on is the DOT regulations about an auxillary tank. I have one and was told that it is NOT LEGAL to pump the fuel from an auxillary tank into a primary tank. In the past, the fuel was not shut off in time annd the primary tank overflowed on to the ground. D. O. T. could give ou some greif if that happened as well as make you pay for th fuel spill,

the tank I have is set up to operate independantly from the main tank. I have a switch on the dash that changes from one tank to the other and also changes the fuel guage as well.

I bought my tank from Dually depot in Elkhart, Indiana. It cost about $800. 00 about 7 years ago. It has a capacity of 115 gallons.

Older Fords and Chevys had an electric valve to swap suction and return from one tank to the other with the flip of a switch. 6 ports, 2 to engine, 2 to main tank, 2 to aux tank. Sending unit switched also. If your truck is stock this would be ok, if you are modified much it will probably restrict flow.
