How do you pull out the radio?

I am going to be getting satelite radio for my truck and was wondering what those of you out there who already have it, think of it.

1. Do you have xm or sirius?

2. What is your opinion of it?

3. Which do you think is better and why?

Vern

I had Sirius installed before I took delivery of the truck. I wanted a clean install without any additional equipment installed on the dash. I love the Sirius and bought a plug-n-play unit that we switch between the camper and house too. Unless you really need a speciality channel like NASCAR on XM or Stern on Sirius, I think the programming is more or less the same. I never listen to broadcast radio anymore.

Ken, What did that cost you at the dealer. Did you order your truck that way, or did they do it at the dealership. Also, what does your radio head look like, and where did they mount the antenna.

I have Sirius & like it, chose this one so I can listen to hockey if they ever play again. Wish I could get NASCAR as well. Would sooner kiss a porcupine than listen to Stern No matter which one you decide on you will like it. No more inane, stupid commercials & lots of choice for tunes

JohnnyH: The cost was $175 for the receiver and $124 for the install kit and about $70 for installation labor. You cannot order Sirius from the factory; it is a dealer installed accessroy only. All 3rd gen radio systems are Sirius compatible from what I understand. The antenna is mounted on the roof, centerline, near the back of the cab. I was going to ask them to mount it more forward to help reduce shading from the 5th wheel trailer but forgot to mention it. I have had very few dropouts so the location seems to work fine.

You can see the antenna installation just above the certer brake light on the picture at http://www.klenger.net/photo_album/truck-camper-slide-show/slide17.html

See my website at http://www.klenger.net/dodge/audio/index.htm for additional info on audio systems.

Enjoy

Terk XM receiver

I strongly recommend the Terk receiver if you plan to add XM to your aftermarket unit. With factory unit it matters little since you will need to use the FM modulator anyway. With the Terk you can connect to your head unit aux input assuming it has one. Alternatively, if you have not yet upgraded to aftermarket head unit and plan to, make sure you get unit with plug ins for the XM or Sirius transreciever. The reception with direct plug in is wayyyyy better than with FM modulator!

In searching archive I found info on adding Sat radio to factory radio, it can be done! There is an adapter that will connect Pioneer or Kenwood receivers to radio's cd changer input made by Soundgate .

i also agree. i have the terk unit. xm radio has it all. im sure both sirus and xm are the SAME thing. they just offer different varities of music that you might like. i suggest sitting down with both brochures(both xm and sirus), and run down each one and see which one offers you the best as far as channels in your interest of music. im pretty sure they are both priced pretty close. just my . 02. xm offers smaller units though.

I have xm in my truck, the delphi unit and at home I have sirius on dishnetwork. I would like to get out of my xm and get sirius in the truck. I think they have a better 80's, country and the hair nation channel rocks. I just wish sirius would get nascar. I could care less that xm is getting the baseball games. Just my 2cents

I have the equipment to install Sirius because it came with my Clarion headunit, but I just haven't installed it yet. I haven't looked at the programming for Sirius, but I have XM in the Freightliner and I like it. I think either one would be good.

Vern,

I had my dealer add Sirius to my factory radio. Loved Sirius but the sound quality of the original factory radio stunk. I pulled it out, put in a Kenwood Sirius ready head, new speakers, a subwoofer and amp, and I'm a happy camper. XM versus Sirius is a tough choice. From what I can tell their signal quality is about the same, their pricing is about the same, so it boils down to which programming do you prefer. I couldn't be happer with Sirius.

While I like the "all in one" concept where my radio head also controls Sirius, I do wish I could take it out of the truck. Once you start listening to satellite radio you won't want to go back to regular broadcast. I'm going to get an add on Sirius for my wifes Jeep only it will be one that is plug and play so we can take in into the house, in the camper, or out on the boat.

I have XM and listen to it at work and in the truck using the roadie (the new roadie 2 is even better). I also take the "home" antenna and tape power unit to quickly plug in the company truck if I'm doing a road trip somewhere. Satellite radio has been good for me since reception is somewhat limited here and I like to have it when I travel. If you have good stations where you are at you might not enjoy it as much.

My suggestion would be to take a serious look at what sirius and xm have to offer in the way of program line up and base your decision on that. Both seem to work equally well. Although there was some previous discussion about the type of satellite orbit each uses and I think the xm type is better, imhm in my humble memory.

Sirius

I have the Kenwood Sirius portable reciever and also have a docking station in my 5th wheel. Love it! The last time I listened to broadcast radio was during baseball season. I tried it for a month then did the "pay once" option.

V,

What do you like to listen to? I have both XM and Sirius. If you like talk radio, Sirius is the best (John Batchelor, awesome show, ABC Radio). Nascar, XM. Music, I like the selection on Sirius over the XM. NFL, Sirius. In fact, the only reason I have the XM, is that Coast to Coast AM (Art Bell/George Noory) is only available on XM. I can't get him where I live on the am radio. I work nights driving a truck, I will listen to him on the way home, and get caught up in the show, so I have XM in the house. Been listening to him for years, don't agree with everything, but it is a nice diversion from all of the crap going on in the world. Besides, he has gotten me through many a snow storm and very long trips over the road. I like the night.

Sirius is my suggestion. Best music and talk. Sports? Take a look at their individual offerings.

Mike

1. Sirius

2. Awesome

3. A while back I would have said Sirius because they don't advertise but XM now has no ads on the music channels. Either one is so far ahead of FM you can't even compare.
