Does anyone have any info on this? I have an opportunity to snag a Ferd 302, new in the crate, for a VERY reasonable price and was wondering if it will work.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Don't know if this helps or not but the old man wanted more power for his '56 Willys Jeep and ended up putting in a '65 289 Hi-Pro which should be the same block size as the 302.

That does help, but I wonder if his '56 had a higher hood than my '49. I don't want to have to cut it up to get the engine to fit...

If his '56 was a CJ5, then it did have the higher hood. If he had a CJ3, they're about the same. I can't remember if they made CJ3's in '56...

Had a '51 CJ3A growing up at home... planned on putting a 289 in it... wish I could remember, but there was an outfit that made a custom bell housing that would bolt it right to the stock transmission!! Ended up scrapping the idea because I was in high school at the time and had no money.

A buddy had a high-hood and put a 302 in his. His biggest obstacle was routing the left exhaust... he ended up putting a crossover in front of the engine to make it work. The stock steering gear/column was in the way. My '51 had the steering column and gear from a '64 Ford galaxie in it... very neat and would have been easy to route exhaust by it.

Sorry I can't remember the name of the outfit that manufactured the bell housing assembly... if I remember, I'll send you a note.

It'll work.

It'll work no problem. I have a freind with a 390 in a 2-A . You will have to exit over the frame rail with the headers and redo the steering. Advanced adapters should have everything for your swap. I have a 3-B that I am putting a 238 V-6 chevy with t-98 four speed into, already done the V-8 thing.

Thanks guys. This gives me a LOT to think about.

Keep the stock L-134 for the coolness factor, or drop in a 302 for the power factor...

I appreciate all the info. TDR is great, isn't it?

Hope I can return the favor sometime.

Duane - That 302 alone won't do much for you if you stick with the stock transmission and axles. The 5. 38 gears in the axles will still limit your top end speed. If the CJ2a is stock you should leave it that way, it will appreciate in value. If it's already hacked up then have fun with it.

It's still stock except the wheels and tires.

I did in fact decide to stay *relatively* stock with it. I'm getting another L-134 and I'm going to try to bolt up a T-176 or a T-18 behind it. I think with the lower 1st gear it would be a better transmission for offroading, specifically crawling.

Does anyone have any info on that? Do these trannies bolt right up to the L-134?

Thanks again!

Duane - go to Yahoo Groups and search for WillysTech, there's about 1800 members, many have done what you want to do. The TDR and WillysTech are two of the most informative and civil sites I have come across.
