I just installed a new pryo gauge, boost gauges, and installed my htt stage IV turbo, went to take it for a drive down the road to see what kinda boost i was puttin down. Let the truck idle for about 10 min while i eat dinner quick. Drove out the driveway. the EGT was at bout 400-450. Started heading up a hill and EGT jump from 450 to 600 to 800 to 1000 to 1200 and stop at 1600. Could I have hooked up the gauges wrong(which im hoping i did) or is my motor really getting that hot(which i hope not)?

thankz Dan

What kind of boost numbers are you getting? Could you have a leak somwhere between the turbo and the intake? My truck runs 710 degrees @ 70 mph with 6 to 7 lbs of boost on flat ground. Even running it hard I have not saw over 1100 degrees.

Did it jump, or steadily, but quickly climb? If it actucally JUMPS, I'd suspect the gauge or a conection. If it climbs fast but steady, I'd suspect you are getting some genuinely high EGTs. With my intercooler leak, I could hit 1400deg in 4th. Patched it with some JB WELD, and I topped out at 1150. The repair has blown off/ broken, but confirmed my suspicions. Point is, a tiny pinhole size leak can cause that much difference in EGt, so if you have a clamp loose, or a boot not completely on there, it can make them skyrocket. Also check the turbo outlet-to-elbow connection. Sometimes they are a booger to get back on just right.

that egt seems very high to me. whare is the probe? I was recently working on my pump and put a board in front of the turbo to kill the engine. the truck ran fine. 3 big air leeks became the intake. after fixing leeks truck died immediately after bored was put in front of the turbo. one way to find leeks. stil would not go over 1400. I now run 30+ boost 1300 tops. htt3/ 14 pods lot's of fuel

The gage is reading right. If it was hookedup wrong. The needle would not come of the 0 peg.

Time to turn the fuel screw out some.

Daniel, its jump not a steady move. It also jump when temps where coming back down too, til it hit about 600*.

TWorline, i wasnt able to get it out on da highway. I didnt even get past the neighbor drive on my gravel road. But i did get on it before it hit 1600*. Got little over 25 before let off of it.

If you hit 1600 deg, had any boost at all and did it before 25 mile's an hour I would suspect the guage. especially if it jumps and doesnt move steadaly.

I was thinking the same thing as CSchafer- check for wires rubbing against your feed to the pyrometer. It sounds like you are getting an electrical spike or interference from somewhere. I'd almost rather troubleshoot the high EGT myself, but at least you are reasonably sure the engine will be ok.

How hot was the engine after your short run? Not the temp gauge, actual engine heat. I mean, pop the hood, was the manifold glowing, rush of hot air come at ya like you opened a hot oven? If not, I'd lean more toward the gauge.

Daniel

well the first run, it was smoking. But my guess it was from the wd-40 that i use on the bolts. I kno there was some grease on there that i used on the drill bit. But like when i pulled over to look under the hood, and got back in it was down to around 400* again. It would start climbing again when i start going again.

you could have too many amps when i wired my guage in to my blower motor it would not go below 1000 even on first start of the morning. i wired it to my cigar lighter which only works in the runa and acc. postion not the start and it works prefect now

mhannink, i did like u did, wired it too the cigar outlet. its seems to work somewhat better. Now it good til it hits 800 then goes straight to 16. Anyhow, i called autometer, and they said to send the gauge in and they test it out to see if its the gauges is bad. I hope it is. also just wanted to say thanxz everyone for there thoughts.
