First let me say WOW this box (standard) is awesome :D This is the first real mod I have done to my truck. The install was easy and I didn’t get any codes. As for mounting…don’t ask. I haven’t completed that part yet.

I do have a question. When I keep my foot in it, my EGT’s can get up to 1300+ very quick. (pre-turbo) What is the best way to lower them? Keeping my foot off the gas is not a solution. I’ve tried this method, but it’s just not a good solution. I have a stock air box and I think I will start here, but we do a lot of dry camping on very dusty roads and I am concerned about keeping the air clean. I also cannot spend a ton of money here, since I barely convinced the wife the box will “help” in towing. Any suggestions?

p. s. Towing a 10K fiver in 60hp mode is a breeze. What a difference :)

Different filter will certainly help. Also might want to think about doing something w/ the cat. The '05's are supposed to have 4" exhaust but I have read that the cat is mucho restrictive. I have the AFE w/ a prefilter and make lots of dune trips and other dusty conditions and have never had a problem.

I've heard that the 04. 5's & 05's were designed and built to handle higher temps. How high, I don't know.

You should be able to drop EGT's with a free-flow air filter and a straight-thru 4" muffler. Each of these add's will probably increase the intake and exhaust sounds, somewhat. Be sure both you and the wife won't mind the extra noise. Personally, I really like it loud but others don't.

I installed a 14" Magnaflow muffler on my '03. Definately, got more sound but, got the drone, also. It's only REALLY loud pulling steep hills, in a canyon, with the trailer on. You can also put a 52" Donaldson muffler (straight-thru, also) on and I believe it would be quite a bit quieter. I believe Fred Swanson, in Wadell, AZ has that on his truck. You might get ahold of him regarding his opinions.

I also installed an AFE ProGuard-7 Air Intake System with a Pre-Filter. It's supposed to filter better than other aftermarket filters, especially in our dusty, desert environment. Mine seems to work pretty well at filtering.

These two additions should drop your EGT's approximately 100/200 deg's.

Where are you in AZ?

Hope this helps.

I just put on the same box, I hve the same high EGT problem. I ordered a adjustable boost elbow, my stock boost is at 25LBS and new one should take it to 30LBS. I was told this would help, but I do have a 03 any difference?

I have the afe dropin air filter and put 3 - 2inch holes in the stock box too. I have replaced the muffler with an WLK-17224 DYNOMAX one, no cat came on my 03. It sounds great and the muffler was only 75 bucks.

Hi Lathe Guy.

Were your EGT's managable towing on the 60 level? Do you notice a lot of improvement in performance?

I have an '03, HO, 6-sp. with an AFE Filter and a Magnaflow muffler which I think cools things down a bit. Just curious how hot things will get with the "X-100" box. I, often, go up to the White Mtns. camping. It's over an 8000' climb in about 230 miles, from Phoenix, AZ.

I'm concerned about this box being "too hot" to use in this kind of application.

Hi SVasquez.

Depending on where you live in AZ, removing the cat may be a problem, in the future.

The heavily populated areas of AZ require emmissions testing and they would notice the cat missing. I, believe, the first 5 years you don't have to test but, after that, you do.

If you had a way of "gutting" the cat, you might be able to get away with that, however.

After all is said & done, do you guys like your new "X-Boxes"?

Thanks.

From what I read in TDR #47 the turbo is responsible for much of the heat build-up. The exhaust side is too restrictive when you start getting up into the 100hp range.

After reading that test, my truck will be stock until I can do intake, exhaust, turbo, box and transmission. Though I can do the intake and exhaust anytime and add the box as long as I keep it at a lower setting.

Damn, you must be rich! :-laf

All you need for troubleshooting is GAUGES, GAUGES, GAUGES!

And if you have an auto, don't tow over 60hp and don't do excessive WOT starts from a stop.

I have been meaning to post here, but my account got screwed up over the last day or two.

First, 1300 pre turbo is not all that hot for a 600 or 610 engine.

Second, 1300 won't melt anything. Just keep an eye on it.

What was changed between the 555 and the 600/610 to allow hotter temps? I was always under the impression that the pistons will melt at 1350 if run for a few mins at this temp. Is this correct? Thanks

I can hit 1450 with mine stock, running empty. With the zxt I have hit 1500 pretty easy but my probe is about 2 inches from the head on the #3 hole. This was not only the easiest place to install it but the closer the better to getting accurate readings of the piston temp.

BHanks.

I am no expert in these matters but, what I heard was that the 600/610"s have an additional injection event that occurs as the exhaust valve opens allowing the extra heat to work it's way down to the "Cat". Aparently, the Cats need a lot of heat to work efficently.

To better, safely, handle the additional heat some of the engines components (valves, etc. ) have been made more heat resistant. Therefore the 600/610's are able to handle the additional heat.

I know there are many of you guys that know a lot more about this stuff than I do. If I am wrong, please correct me or add to what I have mentioned.

Thanks,
