Hi guys,

I have a problem with the shift mechanism on my Y2K auto. #ad
The "drive" position on my shift lever has a little bit of slop. When I shift to drive, if I move the shift lever until it hits the stop, it sometimes isn't really in drive. I'm not sure if it is actually in second, or if it's just the overdrive that doesn't work. Anyway, if I move the shift lever up about ¼ of an inch, it seems to slide into the drive position, and it works fine. I removed the cover from my steering column today, hoping to find a way to adjust the drive position stop up slightly. Unfortunately, the stop is a small slot in a rectangular piece of metal that is riveted (I think) into place on the steering column. So there appears to be no way to adjust the shift lever from the steering column end. Is there an adjustment on the transmission? Is this a common problem? I really dread the thought of bringing my truck back to my dealer to have them "try" to fix it. I already brought the truck in once for this problem, and the tech blamed the guy who installed my Viper remote starter/alarm (wires on the steering column). So then I brought my truck to the alarm installer, and he said that he didn't see anything he did that could cause my problem. I appreciate any help you guys can give me.

I've got the same problem. Also had it in my 98 1500. I've just been putting off having to take it to the dealer.

MCrossley, The white adjuster wheel on the steering column only adjusts the position of the indicator. My problem is with the shift lever itself. Thanks anyway.
