In my quest to break the 20 mpg bearier, I've managed to squeeze almost 24 mpg out of my 24 valve Cummins.
I've read posts that claimed over 20 mpg and quite frankly I've been skeptical, but now I know it's possible, so let me tell you how I did it.
My setup:
2000, 3/4 ton, 2x4, 24 valve, 3. 55, Astro Cab Height Cap, Factory Air Dam,
No Bug Shield
275 RV Injectors -- Torque Dog Box (Diablo) -- AFE Air Filter --
4" Jardine Dual Muffer Exhaust -- PacBrake --
No Boost Module -- Stock Wastegate Elbow
Stock Michelin 265x16 Tires all inflated to 55 psi
1000+ pound payload -- Max A/C, with a small blend of warm
The key to success is the fact that I used the drag from two different vehicles throughout 80% of this trip, by following Steve St. Laurent to Terre Haute and then a semi, who was traveling at a favorable pace, on the return trip. I probably followed Steve closer than I needed to but I felt comfortable with the arrangement, since he knew I was there and we were constantly conversing on the CB. When following the semi, I kept back about the length of an 18 wheeler and I monitored channel 19 to be sure the driver didn't get bothered by my following him. At one point, the driver ahead of me and the one behind me talked about the Dodge that appeared to be tagging along all the way to his point of delivery, but the guy sounded amused so I keep pace with him.
I stopped for fuel before the warning light came on, with 695. 1 miles on the trip odometer and squeezed in 29. 017 gallons, for an impressive 23. 95 mpg
Today, Doc is a happy clown!

EDIT - I forgot to mention that there is 36,000+ miles on the truck
