85690 miles. the nut pops loose. a friend of mine and i worked on it. I used red loctite and staked it... . question... Has anyone tried to double nut the thing? perhaps a second nut would act as a very good jam nut along with loctite and staking. also had to replace the front seal on the transfer case. what a weekend!!!

1996 RAM2500 4x4 5. 9 Cummins w/5sp 3. 54 rearend. 8ft Diamond plow. Scotty type k&n filter. New truck bed(crunched my other one) Hope to add 4" exhaust soon. Silencer ring reinstalled Cat fell off and ran into the woods. Can still here the turbo just fine. Truck now sounds better and runs better! New linex spray on bedliner!

in what way is there no room. the shaft on mine had plenty of thread left for another nut and then some. or is it a clearance issue?

Either the new Mopar nut or the Std. Trans. nut, with the hardened washer both come with, will take up almost all the threads on the shaft.

The splines on the stock mainshaft are not long enough to internally support the 5th gear. Although a few methods of keeping the nut tight have been tried with some success, the 5th gear is suceptible to wobble or loosening on the mainshaft from cocking under low rpm torque hammering from the B5. 9 Cummins. A modified mainshaft with the extended splines in conjunction with the latest locking nut is the best retrofit to date.

Smitty, some of the guys I know here tried to double nut. . did not work
5th gear will push the nuts off the threads, stripping the nuts.
One guy tach welded the nut to the shaft, main shaft snapped into in less than 10k
I used the locktite/staking with a punch on my last one. . it pushed the nut off the threads, stripping the nut and broke 5th/reverse shift fork.
If you tow alot or plan to keep the truck for a few hundred thousand miles, Standard trans. mainshaft would probably be a good investment.

The no bull fix for lost 5th gear nut--"I" have the miles to back it up... . 700+k
Call 1 800 std tran and order the 3rd fix nut--looks like a castle nut with-out the slots. . I think the prt # is 1875.
Clean off the shaft with ether/0r- brake cleen.
Apply red loc tite --can use #271 or new #
272000 (product number) wont make a hill of beans which you use.
Apply to shaft threads & nut threads.
Install nut. torque to 315 ft. lb. Or 300lb.
If you live in n. in. i'll let you rent the tool for a deposit(cost of the tool)or $5. (Tool cost as i remember is $20. )
Here is the key.
Take a 3/16 " center punch and around the diam. with a min. 2-1/2 lb mall stake the nut of the thread of the nut to the thread of the shaft--I went up the cone of the nut at about the 2nd nut thread --nailed it--rotate the shaft went up aprox the third nut thread nailed again--back down to the first thread of the nut -nailed- rotate -back up to the second or thrid nut thread and so on around the dia. of the nut about 10-15-20 times----REMEMBER--I don't ever want this to come off--(SUPER LOC NUT in the making) --Put your back in to it.
I've posted this fix many times and told std-trans of it and the eng'r in charge of the nv4500 and have the miles to stand behind the results (400k+ )First try with a flat faced nut 260k.
Over 700k on unit to year end 2000.
If you want to use the new std tran shaft(Longer splines) you can ,Put it is not needed, with the oem shaft you will get the same results--just in eather case if you take the main case apart make sure everything moves right before stake'ing... to remove the 5th gear shaft nut after this tech. a die grinder with a cutting disc and a cold chisle and a little care is needed to remove, with out damage to the shaft threads.
Not a problem for a real nut twister!!!!
