I didn't walk down to the Madison and pitch a fly into the river... it was moving fast when we were there... and frankly after all day in the park we were tired... and we'd just come from some really great trout fishing on Georgetown Lake in MT... we'd met some other couples and caught our limit for 5 days straight. .
I would assume the campground is full all summer... . but the checkout date is posted on the 6x6 post in front of each sight, so a quick trip through the campground would tell you who is getting ready to move out and when... for us it was great... we're ok with water and sewage for 6-8 days if we're careful...
BTW they do NOT allow you to use one of those blue carts... and dump your sewage into the pit toilets... the closest RV dump is 3 miles away... I was close to fresh water... and ran a hose to fill my fresh water tank...
Hope this answers your questions...
