A/C blowing problem

Ok. . I try to start from the beginning.

I start up my truck (engine cold), and trun on my A/C, (snowflake button is pushed and recirc vent air selected, with temperature range to full blue cold. I noticed that the compressor sounds to be enguaging and dis-enguaging about every 10 seconds and with this the air is blowing in cool while it enguages to warm when it dis-enguages... The truck hasnt done this before, the air would eventually be "cold" after about 2-3 min. I assumed the truck was a little low on freon and took it to have it checked.

The informed me the truck only takes 1lb of freon and that they would evacuate the system of old freon and charge with new. I agreed.

Since I left the place the truck dosent blow "cold" air but rather luke cool -warm. . I tested it again today, outside air temp is 83 and the air coming out of the vents is no where near cold. Please advise of any thoughts or suggestions.

The force at which the air is being moved is ok, it hasnt changed, but the truck never cools down like it did 2 weeks ago and before. .

Any suggestions and ideas are welcome.

Thanks. Brandon

There should be a sticker under the hood for a/c specs. System takes almost 2 lbs of freon. 1. 87 lbs is what service manual states

unfortunately i havent had time to do any research. . dad in hospital etc... that spec is for an 05 ram 5. 9 correct? Please advise. . I am for sure that they only put 1lb of freon in the system fill after they evacuated it.

Thank you

Brandon

it sounds like you did not get the right amount of freon in your a/c. I would take it back and raise a commotion

After your dad gets out of the hospital.

Well I took the liberty to check the underhood sticker this morning, and POW!! it was stairing me right back in the face. . 1lb 14 oz of freon. . Imagine that:confused:. . So back to the shop tonight I go to have them recharge it. .

I will be sure to post if there are any continuing issues. . Thanks again guys and gals, you are the best. :D

***Update***

I took the truck back to the shop and advsied them to add another 1lb of freon. They did and now the A/C works great.

Second question is though, should the compressor kick on and off about every 10 sec when truck engine is still "cold" for a couple of min? With this on and off stuff, the air is cool to warm, cool to warm.

Thanks again

Really need to put gauges on a/c system to see what's going on. Many pressure switches and sensors can affect compressor cycling. Need to see what the pressures are and, to throw more in the mix, ECMs also can control a/c. Some ECM programs turn off compressor during WOT and high power steering pressure and other parameters. Need to get a good a/c shop to check it out. Wouldn't feel comfortable going to a shop that told you 1lb of r134 was what your system needed. When you turn on a modern a/c system a request is made to the ECM and it decides to turn on compressor.

I noticed that mine turns the A/C compressor on and off shortly after engine start up. I think it's due to high pressure on the high side; with the engine idling and the truck setting still there is not a lot of air moving over the condenser. You probably need to get the truck moving to see the compressor on all the time and get full cooling. But it was around 100 degrees when I noticed that.

TLane, That is when I have noticed mine as well, when not moving. . Going down the road is not an issue at all. . And to be honest it dosent bother me that it does it. It usually goes away after about 5 min or so. . My only concern is that it is a signal that something else might be lurking. . :eek::{

Regards,

Brandon

it sounds to me like the fan clutch is taking awhile to engage thats why there is no problem when your going down the road vs sitting still
