2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Yet Another A/C ?

After an unusually long and snowy winter here in New England, the last thing I expected was a non functioning A/C in mid-April! I've read the leaking evaporator posts and will re-charge it if necessary but I don't think my compressor is working. No "clicking" or apparent electrical draw. What can I check to determine compressor function vs. low/no refrig. My 01 will be 5 years old next month, no warranty and has never been back to the dealer, hate to start now! Thanks, Jim G

Im no expert, but I think the compressor will not work if you are low on freon. Mine has the same issue. obviously another dodge flaw, leaky a/c system.



You can buy a low pressure gauge and an can of freon pretty cheap. Put the low pressure gauge on and see what you get.



On mine it was very low, once I added about a can the compressor kicked in. I cant remember what pressure it should be. My gauge has a green area indicating good pressure. I just fill it to there and it lasts for 2-6 weeks. A lot cheaper and easier than removing the dash to fix another dodge bug.

Thanks RedSled, I will pick up a gauge and check out pressure. Fuses and relays checked out OK, so it probably is a leak! I agree with you on pulling the dash, our summers can be so short that re-charging 1-2X June-Aug may do it! Jim G

I had the same problem, My 01 is 5 yrs old as well... I was charging it up this year and I found a leak on the hard line just a few inches from the low pressure port.



The hardline converts to a flex line with a crimp connector and the silver insulation. The connector, at the hardline conversion, was leaking right there on the top of it... . I used a little JB-Weld right on top around the pipe and charged it up... . We will see if that helps. I have the filter for the interior from Genos so there is no junk in the evaporator area..... Check that connector and see if it is leaking there

Thanks Eric I'll look for it as I charge it up. I removed my stock air box years ago and replaced it with a home-made BHAF that rests on the inner fender in this area. May have stressed a line? Where do you guys find re-charging kits? Jim G

Auto zone or any auto parts stores sell cans and the hoses... some hoses have the guage built on the hose for charging or there are hoses that are just a guage.
