When I turn my A/C on, the light on the dash next to the switch lights up, but the compressor doesn't click on and there's no cold air.

Does the system need pressure before the compressor kicks on? I don't want the mechanic to re-pressurize the system only to find out it was the compressor, the switch or no power to one of them.

Thanks

You should put a gauge on the high and low side with the a/c on to see whats going on before attempting to add any freon. I bought a gauge and keep my vehicles charged every year according to what they need, it's cheap and easy to do. Any shop that does a/c work should be able to diagnose it, probably at the cost of an hour or so labor if you would rather go that route.

I might go the dealer route. I have a new baby, a new business and spending too much time with out of state hunting applications this year.

I'll get a gauge though for future use. I'd need to read up on how to use it though. In the future if it needed charging can you easily buy the refrigerant? I live in CA and stuff like that might be hard to get here.

Any recommendations on a gauge?

My gauge is just a cheapo I bought from my local auto parts store. With the gauge comes with basic instructions on how to check each sides pressure and how to fill your system. You should be able to get one along with cans of freon just about anywhere. The gauges come with the necessary adapters and pressure guide lines for the high side and low side. I've never been to Cali but I would imagine the freon would be available there as well.
