I'm looking for another exhaust system, as my truck has a big hole in the stock exhaust. Couple places tell me I have to stay stock. What is the deal for a truck that had absolutely no smog equipment when it came out in California in 1994?
I keep on finding new reasons for be embarrassed for being raised and from California.
Feel free to move my question to 2nd gen engines and transmissions if it's more suited for those forums (or wherever)

If the truck was made in 1993 and is a 94 model it did not have even a cat. That came along the first day of 1994 production of the 94's.

Slap on a MBRP and Donaldson muffler and be done with it.

I agree with the MBRP but the muffler in their kit is every bit as good as the Donaldson. With the help of a sawsall the whole system from the exhaust manifold back can be replaced in about an hour, two if you are a complete novice. No need to employ a shop whose only mission is to sell unneeded parts.

The MBRP muffler is a straight thru design that makes nearly zero sound reduction over the straight pipe. Massive droning when pulling a grade. The Donaldson is bearable in all conditions with no performance loss. Mine is actually a NAPA Donaldson, 9” diameter and 48” can considered a 54”.

The muffler I used prior to the MBRP was a straight thru NAPA muffler. I didn't notice any difference in sound and my MBRP does not have any drone at any time. You can bet I've pulled numerous grades while towing. The most memorable was the Tehachapi Pass with a 5er that weighed 18,600.
