Problems with the aFe Filter????

Caterpillar auto transmission

Ok, you win, I want one.

Which one uses toilet paper? Do any owners of that type have any comments pro or con?

One more thing, I need to hook it up via a 1/8" NMPT feed and want to plumb the return into the turbo oil drain line (1/2" hose?).

Thanks

Frantz is the TP. Do a search, gary has a HUGE thread on it. Lots of good info. Good luck on the turbo drain line, I didn't want to mess with mine. I drilled and tapped my valve cover when I yanked it for injectors. It was simple, and I'll never have to worry about it again. There's always the oil cap on the cover...

Texas Diesel,

You may want to go to "bob is the oil guy.com" (BITOG) & get on their bypass filters forum. Great resource for bypass info.

Are you aware that the "toilet paper" filters need to be changed out at 2000/3000 mile intervals? They filter well but, are a bit more inconvenient, to use. I'd hate to have to change that thing out in the middle of a trip. However, the filter elements are CHEAP!!!

Some of the manufacturers are: Motorguard, Franz, etc.

I've been considering the Oilguard (Oilguard.com). The initial price isn't too bad ($235. 00 for the whole kit) & the replacement, stringwound filters are about $13. 00 ea.

I received a CD from Filtration Solutions showing their FS-2500 while it was working & it was impressive but, expensive ($459. 00 for the kit & $22. 95 for the replacement filters).

Good Luck on your search.

Texas Diesel,

You mentioned using the Turbo Drain for the Bypass Filter Drain. I thought about doing that myself but, was a bit concerned about "flooding" the turbo's drain & possibly creating back pressure so that the turbo will not drain as fast as it needs. I was a bit afraid of restricting the oil flow to the turbo.

I'm probably wrong as the drain seems to be quite a bit larger than the size of the hose going TO the turbo.

What are your thoughts?

TD, tapping the valve cover is very simple, and not as scary as one might think. I was worried about leaks at first, but this area sees very little pressure, and the oil falls to the bottom anyway. It's aluminum, so it's easy to drill and tap, becareful tightening the fitting though, snug is good enough. I've never even seen a wisp of oil on my valve cover. Now the other fittings I have to wipe off every oil change. The nature of the beast I guess. Same with my fuel fittings. Diesel has a funny property of leaking through anything over time.

bypass filter

Texas Diesel I HAVE BEEN USING FRANZ TOILET PAPER FILTERS FOR 38 . YEARS. STARTED WITH 65 MUSTANG IN 1967. I NOW HAVE ONE ON MY 99 TD. WITH A LITTLE OVER 20000 MILES WITHOUT PULLING DRAIN PLUG. 100002 ON TRUCK. I CHANGE PRIMARY OIL FILTER ABOUT EVERY 4 5 THOUSANDS MILES. I CHANGE TOILET PAPER EVER 1 TO 2 THOUSANDS MILES. THIS WILL ELIMINATE MOISTURE THAT IS COLLECTEDI IN THE TP. THIS ALSO MAINTANS THE ADDITIVE LEVEL IN THE OIL AT A GOOD LEVEL. OIL ANALIST IS A MUST IF YOU USE ANY TYPE OF BYPASS SYSTEM. I USE BYPASS FILER SYSTEM TO MAINTAIN OIL QUALITY ALL THE TIME INSTEAD OF HAVING CLEAN OIL AFTER A CHANGE AND THEN HAVING DIRTY OIL FOR THE NEXT 5000 MILES. IT NOT ABOUT SAVING MONEY IT IS ABOUT SUPPLYING THE CLEANEST OIL FOR EVER MILE DRIVEN. GOOD LUCK WALT.

Lots of good info, thanks.

Next is visit to Bob the Oil guy forum.

My goal for the bypass system is not the usual.

I use my waste oil as a lubricant to add to the fuel. But using "dirty" oil is causing the fuel filter to clog about every 5k miles.

Given the current trend in LSDiesel *I* feel the need to continue adding lubricity to the fuel. 2 cycle oil worked well for 100k miles but I cant see throwing away "good" but dirty engine oil.

Hence the bypass filter. It will keep the oil clean and if the oil stays as others say clean as fresh then I have a source for my fuel.

I plan to stay with 5k changes and dino oil in the engine.

frantz

i have a frantz on my 03, i tapped from the plug over the filter housing and ran the return to the oil cap. it works well and i love the filter.

i read everything i could find about bypass oil filters until i was blue in the face.

my decision was between the oilguard and the frantz. i chose the frantz. reasoning?... 1. filters are cheap and can be gotten anywhere. i can buy a case of paper for the same price of one oilguard or any other for that matter. if the company goes out of business or they simply change the design im not stuck for

filters. 2. (my belief and opinion only). . the frantz filters down a little better...

for a diesel, my engine is very quiet. without the filter the engine would get noisy at about 3500 miles on the oil. now i go between 7500 and 8500 miles before doing a complete change out. i use shell rotella as my oil of choice and i think it works well. with all that i have read i still believe that bypass oil filters will only extend your usage out to double the recommended mileage before change out for diesels. gassers can likely go longer. . less polutants dumped in the oil. . i hope this helps
