Question about the new auto's, 48RE

I've heard that the stock muffler is very restrictive but that the rest of the exhaust system is actually pretty decent (although not 100% 4"). Assuming that this is true and the muffler is the major bottle neck what replacement mufflers are out there for us? What muffler would help the sound of the truck (the 03 is to quiet) as well as the breathability?

Thanks in advance!

I went with a Dynomax welded 4" in /out and had the pipe modified to work with the stock 4" tailpipe, does not sound quite like my '93 did straight piped did but for less then 100 bucks what the heck?! EGT's went down 150-175 at any given point!!

When you changed the muff did you get the dreaded drone?

I'm afraid to mess with the exhaust because of the drone but I sure miss the sound of my 99. Oo.

I went 4" all the way with a straight through muffler and resonator. This, measured with an spl meter is as quiet as the stock exhaust while idling and during cruise but has a nice bark when your honkin on it. With two dampeners you normally do not get any drone and I have none. This is a very good setup if your like me and you like the quiet but want better tone with some bark to it during acceleration.

GL, will go out tomorrow and measure the two , held on to my stocker just in case but don't think it will be finding it's way back on the truck anytime soon. RR, the drone is there right at 2100 RPM's, just like I flipped a switch or something, but between that and the other so called "normal noises" on these new trucks I can deal with it. Have 180 miles on this tank since the mods and the gauge is still at 7/8, where as before it would be down on 3/4 by now, same driving habits, load etc. plus my overhead came up5. 5 MPG . Will figure with pen & paper next Friday before trailer finds it's way back on the truck!!:)

AeroTurbine

I just found the answer to your question! I was looking for something to help my truck breath better and get some of the beloved sound back. I just installed the AeroTurbine muffer this weekend, and I love this thing. It's supposed to help dramatically with the egt's but the best results that I have found is the deep rummble that it gives off. It's not as loud as my '99 straight piped, but does have a great sound and really gives ya a big grin with your foot in it. There's no drone to speak of and you can still talk while standing next to it when its running without having to yell. I would highly recommend it and the install wasn't to bad. I bought the whole kit which included two pieces of pipe and clamps along with the new muffer.

Thanks

Thats the one

That is the correct link. I actually was in the area of Pasco Wa, and picked mine up in person, the guys were great and they actually have the product installed on their Ferd. He also installed it on his wifes rig. I've had mine on for about two weeks now and still love it. It has a nice bark coming up through the gears but doesn't have that head pounding drone. I haven't towed yet... plan on towing my 10k toy hauler tomorrow night, so that will be the last big test. It was 259 out the door and the hardest part of the whole deal will be in getting your old system off and turning the first stock pipe 180 degrees. Don't forget to cut the little tit guide off or you'll never get it turned. I found it the easiest to disconnect the exhaust at the tailpipe and the turbo and remove the whole set up then do the disassembly. let me know if I can be any futher help.

I have the 5" from like the one Diesel Dynamics sells. I have seen a dramatic reduction in EGT's. My wifes truck has the stock exhaust and an EZ on it and I can hit 1200* at will. My truck has the 5" and Bullydog Torque Dog and I have a real hard time seeing 1000*. I can hit 1200* on a hard pull uphill on the 150 HP setting. But not until 100 MPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can atribute this to the exhaust.

Quick spool up

I don't have guages installed yet, so I can't give you "real" information about EGT but the the biggest benifit of having the Aero turbine is supposed to be a big drop in EGT's. The guy with the Ferd swears he saw over 300 degree drop pulling his 12K toy. I can say that I do get a faster turbine spool up and I'm up to speed about 100 yards sooner by comparision than what I did before the Aero turbine.

EGT

I don't have a clue where Sedro Wolley WA is, kinda foggy on Waddel AZ for that matter. BUT if you guys are below 3K ft elevation, the EGT drop is understandable. Here in NM, elevations range from 4200 to 7500 ft, and EGT is a real concern. I tried more tricks than farm boy trying to reduce EGT under load ('01 auto). Came up with my own version of "ram air", which helped, but wasn't enough when towing the 5er. Had a 4" exhaust as well, and that helped. Just wondering what is the best bang for the buck for my new '03. Haven't installed gauges yet on the '03, but will in the next week or so. Out here in the west, we can tow at 75 mph, and I have been doing it all my adult life, and plan on continuing. So I need methodology to reduce EGT substantially, but need real world input, as guesswork will roast an engine. (Just ask J. Nutter)..... TIA

On a stock truck you will have no EGT problems. If you add an EZ you will need a Pyrometer. To get EGT's down to a managable level, at your elevation, Try a stock AFE replacement filter($60) and a 4" exhaust system. I can run all day Stock hauling real heavy over passes(7000 ft) and barely hit 1200*. That was hauling a backhoe on a 7700lb trailer. I think I was close to 24,000 lbs. Once I drilled the stock airbox and added the 5" exhaust I can run all day at 1000* WOT uphill loaded. That was with the EZ on. Where I live in 29 Palms,CA the elevation varies from 2200' to 3600'. Coming in from the east I crest a 6000' pass. I did it last month hauling the Backhoe in 115* temps. EGT's were 1100*. Cant complain about that... . I doubt there is a 5er out there as heavy as I haul. I hope this helps. GReg

EGT

Greg, I was born and lived 45 years in SOCal, drove 80-100K a year field servicing mechanical equipment all over from Santa Barbara to San Diego, Santa Monica to Blythe. I know the country quite well. I now live at 6700 ft elevation just 20 miles east of Albuquerque NM. SoCal is NO comparison to this country, and air is the name of the game. My '01 ran absolutely incredible in SoCAl when I visited family there, but it's different ball game here. The '01 had an EZ, 4", BHAF, and I couldn't get EGT above 1000F even going to Bakersfield over the ridge with my foot in it. Here, with the same settings on the EZ, I could hit 1300 in a heartbeat. At this altitude we pay approx 30% penalty on air, and as a result, on horsepower. If you're talking about Chiraco (can't spell it) summit east of Indio on I-10, I blew over it with my foot in the intake, towing a 10K 5er, and could not break 1000F! Different story here. Coming out of Kingman AZ, headed for Flagstaff on I-40, as I got closer to Flag, the more I had to feather to keep EGT down. I appreciate the recommendations, I know your heart's in the right place, but it's not enough here. My search continues... Thanks guys

One thing you need to know is that the 03 is a much cooler beast than the 01's were. I had an 01 too. I took it to colorado last summer and the difference in egt's from here to there were noticably higher. My 01 ran around at 1000* most of the time and the harder I pushed the higher they went. 1450* was commonplace. On the o3 it runs at 600-700* not 1000*. You might be supprised on what you find if you would put in some guages.

EGT

10-4 Greg. I have the set of SPA's sittin' on the workbench in the garage. All I have to do is find some time to install them. I want first to get a good baseline, then let the games begin. 1st on the list is to shove as much air as I can get through this motor, and see where it goes. Thanks for your interest. :D
