Hello all, today I installed the 3k spring kit in my 1997 12v auto. After searching previous posts I was unable to find a situation such as mine. I removed the first set of stock springs and reinstalled the 3k's. While doing so I noticed that the "spring and weight set" could be turned by pushing it with my fingers. I was able to do both sides of the springs without "barring" the motor over via the alternator. The truck idles a little higher although it does drop to around 750-800 in gear with the air on so ok there. Truck runs well and is a night and day difference from the stock gov springs. My issue is this, while driving if you rev the rpms up and let off the engine will "flare" up and the rpms will increase then back off to wherever the foot feed is. I took the thing apart about five times and adjusted the springs several different ways. They are now at the "two clicks past the first one setting". Any insight would be helpful.

Did you go thru the top or the side? It has been a while since I've done governor springs, but I seem to recall that it would be just about impossible to change both sides without barring as they are opposite of each other. John

The "two clicks" is where I have mine. No issues at all. Might want to make sure both return springs are intact. I run mine with one at times and it makes for a real touchy throttle, almost a surge. Not sure if it relates to your problem.

Your springs are adjusted to tight if the motor wants to rev up or slow idle down after you let up on the throttle. The best way to adjust the springs is from the top. Take the AFC housing off the Cam plate out and back the nut off until it does not touch the spring. Then take it down until it JUST touches the spring and then two more clicks and then the other side the same way. This is the best way to adjust them and you can see what the heck you are really doing.

My 97 would float if I spun it up to 2k or over. You could tell in gear that it was floating too. The PO said it had 4k GSK in it. I tightened my springs 2 clicks and it runs better. I wound it up to about 3300 and it dropped right back.

From the limited pictures that I can find, it appears that the govenor flyweight assembly is fit on a tapered end of the pump camshaft and retained by a nut... ... Anyone with information here please chime in.

After getting no response through the forum i took it apart, the gov assembly nut had indeed backed off, had to make a special tool for the nut. Reassembled the pump (not an incredibly easy task in the truck) and problem solved. Just following up on my original post in case anyone else might encounter a similar problem.

Glad to hear you got her fixed. I'd bet that is why you could change both sides of the gov springs without barring the motor over. That should have been a big clue to me and thanks for posting.
